I gave up smoking almost 4 years ago, mainly because I already have the lung damage you are fearing. My right lung has almost no alveoles left. If the same happened to my left lung, I would suffocate. My advice is, stop it now. If you grandma smokes again in front of you, ask her politely not to. If she insists, you have every right to be rude. You could even sue her.

Stop cold turkey. Don't take patches or gums, they only prolongue your pain.

        So true.
        It's cured already.

          Good advice.
I gave up smoking twice, but unfortunately started it again after few months. Gums, patches are crap. They don't help much. All you have to do is constantly repeat to yourself: "I don't smoke, I don't smoke, I don't smoke...it's not me who is smoking...it's not me who is smoking... it's not me who is smoking...

          It calls auto-training

Nah, I wouldn't do that, I would just go somewhere else.

Two of my co-workers cough up black phelgm now and then due to their smoking addiction. Doesn't faze 'em, though. They're outside puffing away — rain, shine or blizzard — every hour or so at work.

Maybe you should take out life insurance policies on them.

Well, The Onion suggests that you "go to prison, where cigarettes can only be acquired in exchange for painful sexual favors." Have you tried that? I'm at my wit's end.

My problem is that I really enjoy smoking. Not just the nicotine (sure, that's clearly a big part of it), but the actual act of smoking. I like holding the cig, playing with the smoke, etc.

That's one reason quitting is such a *****. The other part is the connection between drinking and smoking. I like booze too. I almost feel like I'll have to quit both - which might kill me Joking, joking!

So, in an effort to at least start moving in the right direction, I resolved to reverse my descent into addiction:

I used to only smoke on weekends. So, I resolved that I would go back to that. Even that has been hard, but I've (mostly) been able to do it.

I know I should quit. Have to, even. But I don't WANT to.

I think your wit ended long before that one .

MY company makes Nicoderm... funny thing is, most of the people who actually make that product smoke...

I'm at 1.5 packs a day too, but I have started to only smoke about 2/3 of each cig... I am about to stop.
