80% of my friends and 100% of family are smokers. It's a wonder I held out for 18 years...

Ouch. Then quit with your grandma. Convince her if you can that smoking is bad for you and simply too expensive, and that you're trying to quit and am wondering if for support that she can quit too.

The nicotine patches have the best rate of success. Here are a couple of hints:

              (1) Set the date for quitting a few weeks in advance. Make a list of reasons why you want to quit, and keep going over it as the date approaches. Advertise your effort to friends whom you know will be supportive. Steel your resolve as the day approaches.
              (2) Start with the highest dose patch. Put one on the day you have picked to quit. While it is advisable that you cease smoking once you've put on the patch, in fact many people cheat a little the first few days. If you do so, keep track of your cheating, minimize the number and resolve to taper off over a period of a few days.
              (3) Stay with the patch a sufficient period of time. The error I hear most often is people quitting the patch after only a week or two. The idea behind the patch is to break ther withdrawal-reward cycle of smoking. When you smoke you get a rapid bolus of nicotine that is absorbed through the lung almost as rapidly as if it had been injected. The level begins to drop within an hour or two, and the smoker begins to undergo a mini-withdrawal. By reaching for a cigarette to treat this craving the smoker reinforces his habit in two ways, by relieving the craving and by giving himself another jolt of nicotine. The patch provides a steady level of nicotine, breaking the withdrawal-reward cycle, but it takes time for your brain to detoxify. I generally recommend that someone trying to quit spend at least 4 to 8 weeks on the first dose strength, 2 to 4 on the second and finally 2 to 4 weeks on the third strength. You may have minor craving for a week or two when you start the patch, but it will be much milder than going cold turkey. You may even have slight craving whenever you reduce the dose, but by the time you finally finish with the patch treatment you won't feel a thing. Afterwards you may have mild cravings for up to a year, but maintaining your abstinence is do-able.

I tried on several times to get into smoking over the past year. Just couldn't do it.

Was mostly curious about it. Just wasn't appealing.

                Now onto morphine.

Never worked with my former girlfriends. My current gf tried to threaten with this "it's me or cigarete" argument. I choosed sigarete, she surrendered.

Who can resist your sturdy Siberian charm .

I'm one of the lucky few who can smoke, then forget to buy cigarettes for 3 months, then have a smoke here and there.

Ask Azazel to beat the hell out of you if you fail to quit in a week or so. That should provide a very strong incentive.

I smoke occasionally, as in once every couple months or so, but for some reason I never crave cigarettes.
