If you are a citizen of a country, then you can serve in the military. In most countries you can qualify for citizenship via jure saguinis ("by right of blood') if you ancestors were of that nationality. For example, I qualify for Italian citizenship (something I'm seriously considering) because my great-grandfather was a naturalized Italian Citizen. There are various resources that you can check to see if you qualify for citizenship

You can smoke in the longer AIT schools. Usually it goes by what phase you are in. Pass your PT test and you move on to the next phase which allows you to smoke, use chewing tobacco and go out. At least thats how it was in the 90's. My course was 32 weeks long back in 93-94.
It depends on your training station. If they have the facilities to separate you from the rest of the AIT soldiers, you can drink and use tobacco past week 9 of AIT. If not, you'll be restricted to using tobacco and alcohol while on pass. Actually, you can (if of legal age, of course) use alcohol while on pass from the beginning of AIT. Tobacco is entirely prohibited until you're beyond week 9 of AIT.

Anyway, after reading up a bit, it would be quite a pain in the ass to join the US army. First, you have to get a residence visa with sufficient time to complete your enlistment. Second, you have to establish residence. Third, you have to establish a home of record within the US. You will not be eligible to reenlist unless you establish citizenship before the end of your first enlistment.

So, probably not the best plan. Go for the IDF or the FFL.

I had a friend who was born in Thailand, who joined the US Marine Corps. He had his green card though, which I believe it was you need to join the military if you weren't born a citizen. Your best bet would probably be the Royal Army or IDF.

It isn't like anyone respects them, though.
The UN doesn't have any peace keeping teams of their own per say. Instead they ask member states to contribute forces from their own militaries. Often times if the US or the west wants international forces (like in Bosnia or Kosovo) then they will agree to pay the salaries and expenses for those forces deployed. The Pakistanis and Bangledeshis are well known as countries with excess military for hire because both countries have large militaries which they can't afford to maintain thus they "rent" their excess forces out to the UN.

The US Army takes in lots of noncitizens. Doing so gives them bonus points for their citizenship application so you see lots of people from all over the world joining the Army.

                      Wow, thanks!

Well I could have used this info a little sooner, I must admit. There's nothing more troubling than waking up in the cargo hold of a Chechyn patrol boat wearing some f*cked up uniform and being screamed at in pseudo Russian to go slit a goat's throat for dinner (without any previous memory of how or why you got there). I'm pretty sure Chechnya doesn't have any bodies of water, either - which made this groggy situation even harder on the already taxed mind

In all seriousness, I am quite considering the IDF and Spanish Foreign Legion now... Again, this is an incredibly short term hell I'm planning, so they seem to have attractive offers. Ermm I'm a little too pressed for time online right now though, can I join up in the IDF and stick to ye old Queen's English?

I would never join the USMC... at least in Haifa I can run some sort of clandestine E operation. The American government will tell you that sugar water eats babies and funds terrorism if people start getting high off of it

I think there's no problem to join the IDF and speak in english.

I'm not sure if you'll ever see combat though, and what your pay will be.

I think that if you seek pay, IDF isn't exactly the place to go. They expect more ideology or at least some sense of love for Israel.

...and just WHERE would I go in the world, if God forbid "decent pay" were on my demands for lending myself as canon fodder?
