Masonry specifically states that it is not a religion and you don't have to be religious to join. You must simply state a belief in a supreme being. Who or what that is is up to you.Originally posted by elijah

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it's my understanding that Mason lodges were hotbeds of liberal discussion. In the early 1800s they became more of a cronie society, where Masons got "favors" from others and such...after lots of reform, now they're, again, more of a community improvement group basically.
