Who are they, why are they here, what do they do, what is the basis, nature and extend of their power, how many people belong to them, and how long have they existed (and to what purpose?)?

I was about to point that out. Guess I was too slow.

They're a secret cabal of the Knights Templar who are carrying out a master plan to control the world through the manipulation of telluric currents.

They are a minor department of the ZOG.

There was a good "History's Mistorys" show about it on the History Channel.

Ha Ha. Your petty little ZOG. Everyone knows (with secret clearance) that the Freemasons belong to the Illuminati.
Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul Tigh

Well, right now they're, like most semi-secret clubs or such, merely a community help organisation. You do get a few more connections when you join them, but they're not terribly important.

Who are they? A group of Men dedicated to improving themselves and the world around them.

Why are they here? To uplift, support, and teach each other and to benefit all men.

What do they do? Support freedom, support each other, persue philanthropic issues.

What is the nature, basis, and extent of their power? The nature of their power comes from the understanding of certian truths that have been passed down over time, the free association of men from all walks of life meeting as equals, and the goal of improving the world. The basis of their power is in their numbers(literally millions and millions) and their scope (touching every corner of the world). The extent of their power is vast...many politicians, police, firemen, judges, corporate leaders, and just ordinary men.

How long have they existed? The modern system of lodges was organized in Britian in the late middle ages. Masonry itself has existed from the depths of time.

I am a Mason. It is the single best thing I have ever done.

THEY DO NOT ASK YOU TO JOIN. No Mason may ever ask another to join. It is a fundamental rule. You must freely choose to join and may do so by asking any mason for a petition to join a lodge. There will be a background check and the membership will vote. Unless you have a checkered past, it is rare that membership is ever denied.

To join the Masons you must meet three criteria:

1.) You must be freeborn. No man who has been a slave or indentured may be a Mason.

2.) You must be of Legal age.

3.) You must profess a belief in A Supreme Being.

                            Additionally, You must ask!

I hear that some lodges have well stocked bars, that's about all.
