  • How large is an average attendance at a soccer game?

I am curious about this because FC Barcelona and AC Milan were in town a couple of days ago for a friendly. The attendance was a respectable 45,000. At least I thought it was respectable for a friendly. Capacity at RFK stadium is something like 55,000.

Some soccer-specific stadiums are being built around the US. Capacity is maybe 25,000 for women's soccer and 45,000 for men. There are more soccer-specific stadiums for women, so far. Judging by certain movies produced overseas , women's soccer-specific stadiums aren't that typical in other places. Is this true?

For comparison purposes, college football in the US routinely sells out stadiums seating 100,000+ people. Are most soccer stadiums able to hold that many around the world? Any super-large stadiums?

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Nope the average gate in England for a top flight game is around 40,000.

Barca, ManU, Real and Juve(?) have bigger grounds but not in the numbers you are talking

Thanks for the early numbers. AC Milan and Juventas are playing the Italian Super Cup tomorrow at Giants stadium in New Jersey in a real match. Capacity of 75,000? Pro football stadiums normally have a capacity of 75,000 - 80,000. Pro football and college football don't share stadiums except in the rare instance.

I guess this must actually be worth it for the Italian squads, if they can fill the stadium. It isn't even on US TV, even though I expect it to be on Italian TV.

40k easily in UK or Spain...

Real Madrid is on a tour in Asia, and attendance will likely be near 100%.

In Russia, though, it's often like 5k in Moscow... 20k upwards in some other cities.

yeah in the top flight 30-40k is usual. lower down it dips a lot, 1st division varies a lot (even excepting the wombles ) lower down less than 10,000 is the norm.

MLS normally has attendance of about 20,000. Some games may sell more. I saw a game on TV on July 4 in Kansas City that had 55,000. Today's MLS All Star game had 28,000 (Chivas v. MLS All Stars).

reds: What is the capacity at those 2 stadiums?

I thought the biggest were those built for the Japan/Korea World Cup?
