Although when I was arrested in Genoa, 2001, the Italian police were pretty nasty. They made me -as well as another 10 protestors- strip naked and chucked us in a holding cell. ****s
any girly protesters?

Keep in mind that Rafah is THE most active hotspot in the area. I dont know what's going on there now that there is a cease fire, but before the cease fire there was a LOT of shooting and grenade throwing and sniping and whatnot in the area.

You asked for advice so I'm going to give you the best I can think of. Do what the soldiers tell you to do when they tell you to do it. Don't be the ******* who runs on and on about his rights and how he's entitled etc... Most of those boys (and they are boys) are conscripts who don't want to be there, who are scared, they're given a gun and some nonspecific orders, and that's about it. If you can earn their friendship (preferably when they aren't on patrol) because when the **** hits the fan you want the guy with the gun on your side.
Next is travel with other people if possible because there is safety in numbers and remember to always be polite. When it comes down to the someone deciding who to kill you might just get skipped over because you were the nice guy who always used proper names and said thank you.

Hello nice people.
I'm going to the Gaza strip, Rafah specifically to do a follow up story on the death of journalist James Miller. I'm doing this follow up for a paper (well Scottish Media Group), and I'm going for 6 days. I also have to report the effect of 'the peace process' on the ground.
James Miller was shot in the neck by an Israel soldier, while he was approaching a tank, waving a white flag.
I was wondering if anybody had any advice on how to keep out of trouble/ or anything I need to do, apart from signingthe disclaimer about not suing if I'm shot by the IDF. Advice from any Israelis would be helpful
I'm leaving on the 7th of August.
hi ,
where you there , no , you should not believe all that gets said and sold as facts by some stupid media , ......
just make sure you dont do anything irrational when you get out of gaza , ....
as for the rest , behave , act normal , dont do strange things , ....
dont try to film a nightly shootout as miller did , ..... when bullets fly around , duck
get a good first aid kit , just in case , ......
get a couple good flashlights also , take one that has a cone on top also in red or so , one of those flashing strobe lights is always good
dont go out at night , if you sense anything is wrong , get as far away from it as possible , .....
send a mail if you need help and advice when you go , .......
1st if there's a polymeet - Azazel, i hope you know my number.
2nd : Evil, make sure you get all sides of the story. The IDF can be uncooperative at times, which is terribly dumb, but please try.
Also, make sure you have alot of wittnesses and different versions. Take a look at the video of the event (it was recorded on video, thoguh little is seen in the dark).
Also, double check everything you hear. A lot of civilian pals are full of ****, and are on pay from the PA information office. Alot of IDF responses are at times ****ty too, sadly.
Another thing - I know you might feel supportive of some side, but please do your best to appear neutral, and what ever you do don't get into conflicts with anyone.
If the IDF doesn't let you go somewhere - file a complaint or a request at higher ranks. Don't start an arguement or try to sneak it (unless you really must) because the people you are dealing with are armed, tired and hungry 19 year olds, who are not all good people.
The people in gaza are usually from Givati brigade, where mostly jerks go, from what I gathered. You won't notice signs on them, but those who are in non-combat gear have a purple berette and a red fox on their shoulder patch.
Also, in your article, avoid generalalizations and sentances that journalists love to use, which are inaccurate and dumb. No one back here is amused.
You're welcome to keep in touch with me and dal.
And che is full of ****. Make sure you are known to be a journalist and a nice one at that. Plain folks dont' get cooperation, and not-nice journalists may be given less maneuvere space.
Journalists were often hurt when they were taking cover, or in crowds, when it was not obvious they were journalists.
