U.S. officials ... worry about plans to position Galileo signals on the same frequency used by GPS for military purposes.
Eh? Why wouldn't they use a different frequency?

creating a superstate will ensure that a single european identity will emerge, and remain strong throughout history, and will lessen the chances for war on your continent. world power? mostly because creating an alternative to the US would create competition between the US and EU, and that would lead to investments in the space program.

I guess this is way off topic, but there will never be a single European identity, we are all too different. There will be a point at which we won't transfer any more power from the national level to the EU level. Anyway, except for some people in Brussels (Brussel, Bruxelle ) there is no one that feels "European". I'm Dutch first, Spiffor is French first, Andy is German first...

            Galileo

and, more generally, anything that can create competition in the space programs...it seems all is asleep since the end of Apollo program

It's all good when it comes to discovering space and such. I don't care who does it, Americans, Chinese, Russians, Europeans... but it will be good for all the human kind. I don't care what the nationality of the person is who invented antibiots. It's good for everyone.
And sure, the people who did it can take some credits too.

there is no one that feels "European"
                I do

when I go to the States, twice or so a year, and people ask me where I'm from, I reply "Europe, Holland" and not the other way around.

I answer 'Finland........ it's in Europe'
I wouldn't even mention Europe, if people would actually know where Finland is. I'm a Finn first and always will be. I am European too, but I don't feel it. What is European anyway? It's just bunch of countries. And I belong to one of them, and that's Finland. That's what I am and always will be. Only citizenship of the US will change it a bit, but then I'll be Finnish-American.
Maybe some day.. when I'm old I feel American only.
My kids will be Americans fully though.

There is no discovery going on with Galileo. It will cost billions of dollars to cover the ground that the US has already covered.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

For not even that signifigant a performance boost, IIRC.

I think feeling "european" is nothing that excludes your national identity. Ideally, there should be room for national (and even regional) identities within the EU.
