    BORIS

Mike Wong has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

Incidently, my workcenter Supervisor, CTM2, is almost done with his USC Electrical Engineering Degree. He's a Warsie too, and a Chinese guy.

Who's taking it seriously? It's entertaining to argue about it. I certainly don't take it that seriously. It's not like I've done any labor on it myself.

Thanks for the site Boris, for it only makes what I believe even stronger:

Good for Wong if he is a physicist, and he does a fine job is pointing out things being unrealistic in Trek... but then where does one turn to SW?

The main gripe being possited by the writer of that site is that much of the figures for power use, generation, and rating for weapons are absurdly high. And I have no probem with that: you see, then Lonestar claims that each ISD which is as big as any of the common ships of the line in B5 has hundreads of guns with power ratings even more absurdly high than that which people quote for B5. So if the data given for B5 (which is pulled out of thin air) is absurd, data for SW is even less believable. The guy on the site makes a big deal about how a ship the size of a Mimbari cruiser (which is almost as big as a ISD) ould most certrainly be destroyed by a 2 Megaton mine, yet Lonestar tells me each turbolaser puts out 144 Gigatons, and that a ISD can take many of them?

So again, thinanks for the site, for if the numbers posited for B5 are astronomically high and absurd, then SW is too far gone to argue for, which is my point.

I like the Daystrom Institute Technical Library but they don't deal with St v SW.

                • GePap, I don't think you're quite getting it. No one here has said SW is realistic. It is you who are claiming SW is more unrealistic than ST or B5. I'm just pointing out how those two are also unrealistic.

You think SW is more unrealistic...but this is just quibbling. Once you've crossed the threshold into unrealism, arguing about the degrees of it is silly. If you're going to harp on realism, you have to accept all SciFi is unrealistic. If it weren't, it wouldn't really be SciFi, would it?

SW vs. ST vs. B5 vs. whatever just has to accept their unrealistic qualities. That's the fun of the debates--arguing just on what you see and what you can deduce from what you see. Crying foul and running to the realism defense doesn't fly, because none of them are remotely realistic. It's fantasy. If you don't want to argue the merits of each universe but just continue to yap about realism, then I'd suggest just staying out of such arguments, because you make them unfun.

                    • There is no fun in having one side claim: "our ships are utterly indestrcutible by your puny weopons (hey, just look at the "facts") so there!" That does not allow for even "mock debate". And level do exist in everything..t o say "they ae all blue" is not the same as saying "they are all the same shade of blue"

Oh and there is such a thing as "hard Sci Fi", little of which make's it on TV.

The bit about standing in the core of a star goes a little bit too far though. Thankfully none of that made it into the movies.

                          • Yes, the movies... I don;t read ST, or SW, or B5 novels. These are movies or TV shows, the "novels" are extra, so when soemone comes spouting about "Canon"? What is this, the bible? No one can make the claim about which sources are accepted as "canon" and still say they take the "arguement" as just good fun....

                            • The SW novels are organized under Lucasfilm, which makes them Canon unless directly contradicted by the movies. Both the TPM and AOTC novelizations patch the EU-Movie plotholes quite well.

B5 novels are set in a similiar way. ST novels...there is no organization. There are nothing! ST Authors (except Peter David) should be thrown from Helicopters!
