it allows us to project force effectively.

Sure, but that begs the question of why you, or anyone else, needs to project force in a time where there are no conventional military threats.

What the UK really needs is an unmanned hypersonic bomber capable of striking a target anywhere in the world within a couple of hours. Then the navy won't need large carriers, only small ones for ASW and fleet air defence.

Any self-respecting country should be able to manufacture war machines like that (clicks fingers). We should have given the job to the French company; they have a much better track record. If we're so desperate about saving British jobs, then BAE should be nationalised and the top level of management thrown out. They don't have any real competition, so there's no point keeping them as a private company.

Britain simply doesn't have the money to build and maintain a half-decent navy by itself, which is why we should be looking more towards forming a European military force. The combined resources of Europe would be more than capable of paying for this sort of stuff.
"Paul Hanson, you should give Gibraltar back to the Spanish" - Paiktis, dramatically over-estimating my influence in diplomatic circles.

90% of the sorties flown over Afghanistan (and a good chunk of the ones over Iraq) were based from Carriers...and Afghanistan is 500 mi inland.

                      Now, THAT's power projection.
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.
