That's one I haven't heard. The only connotation I have heard links the name to the story "Little Black Sambo", which was about an Indian boy and some tigers. The story was published in numerous editions around the world. Some of those editions published in the U.S. used drawings that made Sambo into an African boy (Tigers in Africa? Shhh!). Btw, the restaurant chain Sambo's which had over a thousand stores when I was a kid was named after the two founders, Sam and Bo. They played up the "Little Black Sambo" connotation in their marketing, though they used the original Indian Sambo in their depictions. Nevertheless, they faced a lot of criticism about their name and marketing.He's got the Midas touch.
