you know, I think it's time for another circumcisn thread at Apolyton . That form of torture is performed on many americans too . I was a victim of that.

My brief input on the issue.

First of all, here in Finland I was taught about sex in biology on the 9th grade in lower secondary school and basically the one compulsory health education course in the upper secondary school includes it too. However for some reason we never had time for it, which wasn't a pity. The education on the 9th grade was a part of human biology as it fits well with it (IMO) and it was quite good, as our biology teacher understood the importance of it. Due to that we even had a person from the AIDS support centre talking about HIV and AIDS at the class. We even received free condoms. Also the information our teacher taught did include more details about preventives, as out biology book was about 10 years old back then, so it wasn't so accurate. But in general biology books in Finland aren't conservative or try to hold back facts (we aren't the South in USA). I myself did find the anatomy part educative, as back then you really didn't know all the details from a biological aspect. Also worth to notice is that our sex education would have been even more progressive, if the school would have afforded a penis model which can be used for learning how to put on a condom, but our biology teacher had to pity that there wasn't funds for one (not expensive, but they were tight on cash).

In general it seems to be that it depends very much on the school and teachers here. Sexual biology is a part of biology, but apparently it looks like some of it is left to the gym teachers or then it's not educated that much in detail in biology. None the less, there hasn't been any conservative or religious protests against it, so it's just basically because not much of attention is paid to it on national level. Worth to notice is that new biology books I've seen do even mention different sexual profilations like homosexuality, pedophilia and such. And that's the 9th grade biology book I've seen. There's several different ones in use, as there's different publishers.

As for the discussion here, I have to agree with both Che and Kramerman. Facts should be facts and if something is taught about sex, then it should be adequate and in-depth (not meaning we should see students being taught about various sexual intercouse positions, sex toys, etc. It's one good way to prevent many unwanted teen pregnancies and abortions, STDs and such. If HIV is a problem, then now chlamydia seems to be spreading quite much due to the lack of condom in intercouses in one night stand relationships, so sex education would be needed for that too. I look at this all from a realistic and liberal point of view, as I can't see why this should be seen as tabu or something which should kept secret due to religion or politics. Gee, even in Iran sex education is nowadays a standard pratice and even adequate, plus condoms are easily available (the state has a condom factory). So the conservatives and religious people in USA should wake up too and realise it's the 21st century now, plus something has to be done.

I had a condom break once. I was kind of proud, but then I kind of worried about getting AIDS. I'm pretty average size down there though. Maybe I didn't leave a little slack at the end. You have to do that with some of them.

              back on subject.

as for my sex education. well... I can't remember much. It basically said what the sex organs are and what they are used for (like I didn't know that). They also talked about STD's. We didn't dicuss condoms at all.

The interesting thing is they said wet dreams were normal, but they never said what they were. You don't know how old I was when I finally figured out what a wet dream was .

Suffice it to say, my sex eduation in school was pitiful. And I didn't have any until middle school. 7th grade I think, which would make me 12.

They should have sex education for girls in elementary school. It is now increasingly common for girls to hit puberty by age 9 now. Scientists still haven't figured out why girls are hitting puberty so early. They think some kind of chemical in foods or pesticides may be a factor. And there have been cases of kids having sexual intercourse at a very early age.

I do support teaching condom use. They found that teaching the use of condoms doesn't decrease teenage sex (why would it?), but it does increase the usage of condoms. That should help keep teenage pregnancies down, and STD's. It's good practice for the rest of their life.

I think public school have a responsibtility to instruct kids how to use condoms and instruct them that they should always use condoms. The kids should also have to put one on to pass the class. Put one on a banana of course- you can't have kids showing their teacher their penis- except for extra credit.

I thought that the method that Pamela Smart woman used was pretty persuasive.
