    Boris is correct.

Well I have a copy of a US History textbook and there is nothing in there about it. It only said there was an explosion, people blamed the Spanish and Congress declared war.

I'm not sure if it is any text books, but I did learn it in highschool. That was probably thanks to a knowledgeable teacher, though.

Unfortunately teachers usually teach right out of the textbook. In California we have standards now. All the textbooks are based on the standards. They don't even leave the teacher enough time to clear up all the bull**** in the textbook.

It's not that funny, though, since Creationists are actually getting some dumb**** county boards to allow teaching their crap in science classes, as if there was something remotely scientific about it. Marietta County, GA needs some major reality checks.

That being said, I would like to recommend a couple books to you. They will help you recover from the crap they teach you in school.

                          1) Howard Zinn's, "People's History of the United States"

                          2) James W. Loewen's, "Lies My Teacher Told Me"

And before you read them... read this thread first .

'Lies My Teacher Told Me' filled with half-truths

Loewen and Zinn are unabashed Communists. If that's not your sort of thing, I'd recommend you skip both.

That's a board. What's that suppose to mean? Loewen is not a communist. You are the perfect person to read the book Imran. I think you really got screwed up in school.

trying to discredit scholars with ad hom's... it's too bad your position is so weak and blatantly inaccurate that you can't even debate their conclusions.

Nothing on that board showed Loewn to be a "Communist," nor was there anything shown that made me think his book is rife with inaccuracies.

Loewen explicitley states in the book, several times, that he isn't a historian and the crux of his work is exploring a sociological phenomenon, namely the jingoist nature of school history texts. He is, by and large, right on the money with his assessments (the one poster showed rather diligently how his analysis of Columbus, while perhaps in error on details, is generally quite correct).

Loewen also shows that the different texts use often contradict one another about history, which is another point people often tend to miss.
