I updated S&D, and it found some new stuff. Got rid of them now, hopefully it will work.

I'll install ZA too. Always planned to, now I got the reason.
Say, if you close all the browser windows, and P2P programs, but don't disconnect, do the Internet connection little computer screens in the systray still flash from time to time?

      Does this help?

Apparently a properly updated Spybot should do the trick.

Which is a normal thing, unless it's too often .

            YES.
If it's rather often, someone's calling back home. Get zonealarm, and find out who exactly.

Another thing: does your "sent bytes" approach your "recieved bytes"?
If so, that's a black flag. No more doubts.

S&D in normal Windows didnt work, and when it asked me to restart it didnt work either.

Following Solver's advice I ran S&D in windows safe mode and the problem is now removed.

              Now let's install Zone Alarm

                Problem :

ZoneAlarm is installed and works nicely, BUT :

I play Utopia. It's a text based web game. When I try to login(as usual) I get the following message :
You can only login to Earth: 2025 and Utopia through the Swirve.com website. Please visit Swirve Games and try again.

Yes, and it was a damn nasty piece of spyware that Eli has kindly sent to me over email.

Eli: this sucks. You can disable it for the time you play. (though I fail to see any possible problems if it's a browser-based game).

Activity on a cable modem pretty much never stops, but you shouldnt be seeing your ZA icon flash.

Since this is on-topic I thought I'd ask if anyone has seen something similar to my problem.

On certain webpages it will take forever to finish. Sometimes it will put half the page up instantly (which is what it used to be for the whole page) but will take another minute for the 2nd half. If I download a large file the speed is 150-170KB/sec. I get a similar problem accessing poly sometimes which I dont get with my PC at work at all.

My latest thoughts are that it might be related to the upload speed somehow. At work I have a T3 connection so fast up and down. At home I have fast down but maybe 5-10KB upload (I'm gonna call and complain).

Not so on an ADSL connection. IIRC, Eli has ADSL.

doesn't mean anything. update it again

No need to burn your computer at the stake... All you need to do is sacrifice you mouse (or trackball) to it, dance around it, burn some incense, and reboot... That should do the trick

I would have probably given up and reinstalled the OS at this point...

Not so on an ADSL connection. IIRC, Eli has ADSL.
What's that connection icon doing in his systray then? I thought that means a phone line connection being active, and that's not the case with DSL. (At least I don't get that icon, I always thought DSL is sort of a LAN, whereas a phone connection is just that, a phone line.)

Btw, I went to http://www.odysseusmarketing.com/desktopfault.aspx (I doubt they have nasty surprises for Firebird users) and saw this on the bottom of the page:
