    • The fact that you apologetically explained to BeBro, that this wasn't a planned troll, and you just had to say something to me. I am sure LoTM appreciates that you won't go on trolling him. Or will you continue to prey on him?

              • apparently it was only half-assed though. after the phone talk, his office stated that he didn't directly apologise but only expressed his regret about how everything worked out and also repeated his concerns about the things "he had to endure in the european parliament", as in the things he was told and called by others. source: spiegel.de, translation: Andy V.

                funny? no.

Your post in answer to mine about the "obligation of remembrance" was very sensible I agree with you 100% on it.

And like BeBro said, I don't intend to relativise the Holocaust, which was by far the worst genocide both in numbers and intent. But you have understood already
we've been getting very intensely into issues of memory and national obligation here lately - from the debate over black reparations (where the German example is cited, although i think mistakendly so) to questions about native americans (are the native american casinos a form of reparation? what about land claims? how to handle historical sites like Little Big Horn. A new museum in DC. Native american nicknames on sports teams, etc) to the debate about the Smithsonian exhibit on the 50th anniversary of Hiroshima (they displayed a bomb from 1945 (no warhead) with alot of text about Japanese suffering - veterans complained it wasnt balanced with stuff on Japanese atrocities - they ended up, IIRC, just displaying the bomb without any text - which was quite powerful, if you were at all historically aware - the museum director ended up getting fired, after being attacked by both sides)
