Whatever "we" do will be wrong, so all the bellyachers need to plan for every scenario.

I think we should just grant 'em all refugee status and let 'em move to the Dallas area.

The french were as effective in Cote D'Ivoire as the british were in Sierra Leone. Despite their lack of numbers, the french presence has definitly made a difference in the Congo. Based on France's recent actions in africa, i would be thrilled to see a french led intervention in Liberia although the history of Liberia makes that unlikely.

A French/US led coalition in Liberia would go a long way towards easing strained relations. Invite the Russians too. In any case I say we do nothing unless all our allies plus the UN back the intervention.

I'm still waiting for a real reason why we need to go in at all.

After thought, I think the Africans in the region should deal with it. The US could provide support to them in a number of ways, such as paying for Nigerian troops or whoever. But there's no reason why an American soldier would be any better than a Nigerian soldier for this. And there's lots of reasons why he would be worse. The American soldier would be much, much more expensive too.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Uh, that was the reason. The French are ultimately more important to us than Liberia. It's a tad Machiavellian - more symbolic than anything - but we could a) mend relations with France and b) do something good in the world. It's all about timing and oppurtunity.

Sorry, not good enough. There are cheaper ways to mend fences. If we absolutely must do something about Liberia, DanS seems to have the best suggestion so far.

But I'm doubtful our current leadership is savvy enough to find them. Bush seems to have a one track mind wrt foreign policy: Shoot first, don't ask questions later. This is right up his alley.

I suppose ultimately you are right. I didn't support the big budget blockbuster "Raiders of the Lost WMD" so I guess I can't support this one either.

Can Bush afford it politically? Obviously not in international circles, but what about at home?
