Of those executives, 58 percent said their workloads were responsible for the decision.

One job that I worked at I never used all my vacation.
The reason was that I couldn't find time to fit one in between all by "BUSINESS" trips that were really PAID vacations. 4 star hotels, golf, gourmet meals, and then sit in a conference for a few minutes or close a deal on a golf course. Don't let the rantings of America's elite fool you with their fake sob stories.

Where I work, (just had my 5th anniversary) I only get three weeks paid a year, but I also get 2 week paid for short term illness which I can take whether I'm sick or not. If I don't use it I get a 1/2 pay bonus at the end of the year. This type of thing is more common then you think, (since the last three places that I've worked had similiar policies.) So not all companies in the US are that bad. I would almost hate to see legislation passed since some companies might use it as an excuse to cut back to whatever the legislation proposed.

Vacation time does kinna suck here, that's true. I get two weeks, and a whopping one extra day a year for every year beyond five (yay! ), and 5 sick days a year.

But...my solution is to just take the days anyway. Unpaid, which blows, but....gotta do what you gotta do. I just buzz my boss and tell him I'm taking a sanity day and he doesn't give me any grief over it.

I'm glad that the OTers are finally beginning to see some sympathy for corporate execs.

All that some silly law about vacation time would do is interfere in the rights of people to make voluntary contracts with each other.

Whine and ***** all you want about vacation time. Just remmeber that not every place of business offers 5 vacation days per year - some offer a lot more. Go work for one of them if you would rather.

Surely any party that promised (say) 4 weeks holiday a year would get the popular vote?

Probably not. 2 weeks is customary. If you get more, it's a nice bonus. Don't think there is an outcry to change the MO.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

My normal day is 7:00-5:00 sometimes more. But If I feel the need to leave in the afternoon to hit the links, no one gives me any crap. (I'm salaried, not hourly)

I wonder if this will eventually become an issue at trade negotiations and that countries like those in the EU who give legal minimums will start to insist on reciprocal legislation in the rest of the world or seek trade restrictions to remain competitive if they don't get it.
