glad I didn't buy an hdtv yet.

The technology is still not proven in my view. This is a good example.

I don't see how this proves HDTV isn't proven!

Could it be that the SONY playstation II is competition for the MICROSOFT xbox??

because a tv from a name brand company shouldn't do that!

I bet you this isn't the first case.

No way I'm going to spend over $1000 for something that can't last over 5 years at least.

Asher, that type of distortion is usually caused by a magnetic field, as Paul Hanson described. Also, speaker wiring and/or electrical wiring in walls, or even certain kinds of metal support beams can interfere and distort the TV picture. If you don't have any speaker near the TV, I can't begin to postulate what the problem might be. We've got a 36inch Sony Vega Flat-Screen TV. When I wired some of my 12 inch JL Audio car woofers to our system, I noticed the distortion. Positioning the speakers at certain angles and distances got rid of the effect. But as you said, you don't have speakers or strong woofers nearby.
To us, it is the BEAST.

                      did you try degaussing?

check your manual about that though

I don't think they are real expensive. There are small degausers- actually they may be called magnetic tape erasers- but they have the same function.

I misread the problem the first time. So I was *****ing about HDTV's. Really the only thing I don't like is the price

There's a good chance degaussing will do the trick.

So when CRTs from Sony break down (and they do, btw), do you say that CRT technology is unproven?

No way I'm going to spend over $1000 for something that can't last over 5 years at least.

It'll last 5 years and over... unless something strange happens. If this were the norm, you'd think you'd hear about it more often .

Oh man that sucks.. you had only 2 year warranty? My dad just bought a new tv, and it has 6 year warranty, and paying little extra he could of had 10 year warranty.. Usually tvs here come with at least 3 year warranty..

                            Yes

All consumer goods are designed that way... if stuff was designed to last there'd be no opportunity to buy sell the suckers (oops, I mean customers) a new model.

Why do you think Rolls Royce has a lifetime warranty and other car makers don't?

EDIT: I would say it is VERY LIKELY that a competent TV tech could sort out... the problem is getting the TV to the tech or the tech to the TV.

                              actually I take that back.

I'm willing to bet degaussing will fix the screen. HDTV's may be more sensitive to magnetic fields or something.

                                I fixed it.

I unplugged it, roared loudly at it and stomped, and went to dinner.

When I got home, I plugged it in to show my brother what was wrong with it, and the problem was gone. He called me a dumbass and hit me. :/
