When's the last time a Harvard or Yale professor ran the country . It's one thing to be a member of the intelligensia, quite another to actually rule and make the decisions for the country.
The intelliegensia trains the people who run the country, at elast most of them. As for "running the place", the president makes the final decisions, but staffers and underlings set the agenda as much as him. The presidents staff is key, and mot much of ti comes form anywhere in the deep south. (lots of texans, but they are texans).

And no, I can think of no big ideas or movements or philosophies coming out of the south and taking the US by storm. The progressive movement that was central through the late 40's and 50's came form the Northeast and Midatlantic. The conservative revolution came from the west. The south pet notion died in the 60's and 70's, and now at most they can claim biblical fundamentalism as the big political movement from the south. To me biblical fundamentalism isn't much of a thinking man's movement.

Only if you think Goldwater & Reagan were the only founders of the conservative movement.

Mainly because of two Southerners (MLK, jr and LBJ).

To me biblical fundamentalism isn't much of a thinking man's movement.

Yet look at the power it has gained over the country. Don't tell me that smart people weren't at the head of that movement to make it spread so.

          That's the unfortunate truth.

          • the south is the poorest area of the country, it should be noted though... also southern states have the highest numbers of cases of gonnerhea and other venereal diseases per capita...

More and more so everyday, it is. The major southern cities: Atlanta, Charlotte, and even Mobile are socio-culturally removed from The South. The South's voting power is substantial but the interests those votes represent continue to change.

              • Amazed at how weird this thread became.

AND unpleasantly surprised with the anti-Midwest jokes.

Ok, Slowwhand -- now I know a lot better how you feel with the anti-South bullsh*t.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, ya?
