If you paint a smile on like a clown, peope can see it's false, so they treat you falsely.
Best move? Cautious optimism. Sniff around (not litterally - with words, body language, suggestions) how people are behaving. Are they behaving like an arsehole? Are they false? Are they happy?
Once you've got a rough idea, then it's time to make a CONSCIOUS decision. Don't let your reactions handle it - reactions are for emergencies, not everyday chatting.
After a bit of practise you get OK at it. After a while it seems "normal" to be nice, so you get flustered when people are nasty. Practise, practise practise. It's a maze to be "right" all the time - we all make mistakes. The important thing is to learn from them, and try again if we get another chance.
