"A stich in time saves nine"

What the **** does that mean? Nine what?

It's a historical reference. Because the US Supreme Court reversed itself on its New Deal jurisprudence (the 'stich in time') it saved NINE justices on the bench... or else FDR would have packed the court.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
    - John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

Ignoring Imran's strange answer, I think Japher has it right. It refers to sewing up holes in your clothes. If you fix a small hole quickly, it won't require many stitches. If you wait, the hole gets bigger and takes nine times as many.

"This thread is toast" (Various mods)

Now, if it was "This bread is now toasted" it might make sense...

Thanks to all for clearing up the stitch thing. I'd always thought it meant losing nine things out of your pocket.

Well this week's prize for lateral thinking obviously doesn't go to me.

Did you come up with this patently absurd answer yourself, or did it come from somewhere else?

The phrase has been around since 1732 at least, when it was used as a slogan for a seamstress.

All it means, as has been stated, is that prompt attention to a problem quickly will save further problems down the road.

Come on, that's not as bad as the guy who thought "hypocrite" was from a man named "Hypocrates".

Or the guy who didn't know what the "nine" were.
