That's why. Again we need more information and experience about GM.

There's a car parked other side of the street that has "Don't mess with Texas"-sticker on it. My car would probably have "Don't mess with nature"-sticker on it. We need to be cautious with these things.

About 100.000 people are expected to demonstrate this Friday at the summit site (Porto Karras, Chalkidiki) and this Saturday in the city of Thessaloniki against the EU and it's policies and also against the USA and the occupation of Iraq. There was a 20.000 people march against racism and xenophobia today.

They should march against the occupation of Macedonia by Greece .. .. but have it as you will

There are a lot of participants from the Balkans you know, mostly Bulgarians, Serbs and Turks.

They are having trouble though. The turkish anarchists were unable to get a visa, and the Schengen treaty was suspended for some participants from within the EU.

Not to the anti-GM crops folks. They've gotten their collective panties in a bunch and have become convinced that this meeting is a secret attempt by multinational corporations to poison the world's food supply. Further, several leftist organizations (mostly from the San Francisco area) have vowed to come to Sacramento and "shut the city down" (at least that's what they were saying they wanted to do on Pacifica radio; a far left of center broadcaster) with the goal of disrupting the meeting and preventing ministers from being able to reach the convention center. Some have said they expect five days of roving street protests which they hope to be larger then the anti-WTO/World Bank protests in Seattle three years ago. The Governor and the mayor are both saying they’ll bring out extra police to help keep the protests from getting out of hand but several of the local TV stations are saying they think it might not be enough.

Of course these whiny leftists never asked those of us who live in Sacramento whither we want them to come here and shut our city down. Nope, though I suspect most of my neighbors would rather prefer they take their protests and road blocks some where else. We just want to be able to get to work in the morning and maybe go to a restaurant in the evening without a bunch of non-bathing hippie leftists causing problems and taking a proverbial **** upon our city.

I’m thinking of starting my own protest rally where I can hold a big sign saying “Leftist protesters GO HOME!!”. Ah, heck. Who am I kidding? I’m going to be a work. To bad these protesters can’t just go get jobs as well then maybe they wouldn’t have the time to pull this stupid crap.
I'm a leftist, and have nothing against GM food as a technology. I happily knowingly eat it.

As an update to the original post NPR is reporting that the anti-GM crowd says they'll have 100,000-80,000 people protesting the Ministerial meeting next week. I'm hoping less then 10% of that number show.

Speaking of not showing; many of the agricultural Ministers from EU nations have choicen not to go to the Sacramento confrence since the EU is busy trying to figure out a way to reform the Common Agricultural policy (CAP) though Chirac is doing just about everything in his power to prevent it. France is the biggest reciever of agriculutural subsidies under CAP so he doesn't want to mess up the Brussel's gravey train.

Still Ministers from 70 countries are going to be attending and this meeting is supposed to hammer out which agricultural policies will be written into the next round of GATT.

The must have been out of towners because San Diego is a VERY pro-military town. I mean 20% of all US forces in Iraq are based out of San Diego and there's something like 150,000 active duty personnel in the city.

Only 99%!?! Does this mean upon eating my 100th meal, I drop dead?!? At three squares a day, that only gives me a life expectancy of about one month!!

Don't confuse us with those genetic throwbacks from over the Tasman. That's one of their predilections (like drunkenness, and cheating at cricket).

                          ------

You know an American was walking in the outback once when he came across an Australian furiously buggering a sheep.

"Excuse me sir", he said, "shouldn't you be shearing that sheep?".

Replied the Aussie, "Piss orf, I ain't shearing this sheep with no bastard."
