    Not for making home movies.
MaximumPC did a test between a relatively new PC and Apple's latest flaming speedster several months back. The results were unfortunate, to say the least, for Mac fans. The Mac got trounced in every category (even got beat in image editing!!!), and the PC cost much less. Anyways, if I feel like it later I'll find the issue.

As for your question, make sure it has a *****in' fast graphics card (I'm not so much of an expert more than to say *****in' fast) and she gets a good digital camcorder.

Its not so much a matter of hardware, but software. If PC software can do what she wants to do, then I would go with a PC. They tend to be cheaper.
Of course, you have to factor in software cost if that doesn't come with the digital camcorder.

Regardless, your main bottlenecks are harddrive space (as monolith mentioned) and amount of RAM. CPU speed is of secondary concern.

I like Ted. In 1976 his music was good. Now he is an amusing American icon, perfectly suitable for saying crazy things on talking head shows.

                  How very , very true.

Not a surprise to see the knee jerk reactions.

One other factor is your sister's computer literacy.

If she's OK then either a Mac or a PC (assuming the software she wants is available for both).

If she isn't, then a Mac is going to be easier to use and maintain.

If she can't afford a Mac + software then it's going to be PC no matter what.

One question that might settle the issue - is it for digital editing of real footage or for computer generated imagery like Babylon 5?

If the latter then either will do it (PC cheaper of course) - if the latter she might as well get a real graphics machine and neither a PC or Mac!

She likes to record people doing stupid stuff, much like jackass, but was doing it before jackass so shes not imitating tv, and wanted to make movies and burn them onto dvds (I was oblivious to the fact that thats possible, is it?).

is it more of a question of getting the computer for the software then?
(I dont want to unnecessarily turn her into a mac lover)

The best thing to do would be to take her to a computer shop and let her play with imovie 3 and Windows Movie maker.

Whichever one she finds easier to use will be the best for her.

Mac has been known for their superiority in anything multimedia for sometime. Unfourtunately, its an outdated misconception. but reputations are hard to break when so many people aren aware of the specs and especially when Mac folks are advertising their old reputation as if it still holds.
                          :-p

Jackass isnt the first to have done that. Ive done that waaay before and Im not even close to first to come up with such idea.

The point is many people have done it years before but no one really thought about making money out of it by airing it on mTV (cause it still is a dumb idea that somehow works)

Those results have little relevance here since they are talking about pro level stuff. Next week it may well be a different story since Apple is supposed to be radically upgrading its Powermac line.

It's the free or low cost software that needs to be compared. I don't think his sister needs something like Final Cut Pro.

Asher: MS can do no wrong right?

Flat panel IMAC would probably be a good idea. My brothers is better than my 2.8GHz box running XP at vid stuff, and even better than the linux dual boot on the same box (although that is better for all else except games).

what does iMovie do that Windows Movie Maker doesn't?
It doesnt empty your bank balance through your nose.

MS Licencing: Insert Wallet into drive $, and press return to empty.

And XP is NOT the most stable OS on the planet skywalker, why does it seem to decide to reboot with no warning at inopportune moments, why does it only put 2 channel sound into my 6 point surround sound soundcard, and why does Linux work perfectly, except for running windows binaries which is improving anyway?
