Sorry, none of them is fictitious. The idea of St George slaying a dragon is fiction - the actual person was a noble in the Byzantine court, as I remember.

That leaves St Patrick (a Welshman ? who converted Ireland - couldn't have actually been Irish, could he?) and St Andrew (whose nationality is unknown to me - but somebody started converting Scotland so why not give him the credit, eh?)

Eh? Which particular act are you talking about here? Union with Scotland? Union with Ireland? More than one act involved.

That's because it's the British flag, not the English one. Here, don't you mean a Frenchman's arrow in an Englishman's head?

    Nice troll.

I like the present day Union Jack... very nice flag indeed .

I'd be sad if they changed it, but there seems to be little chance of that (though if you want to add black, should brown also go in because of your large Indian/Pakistani minority .

Heh, the Georgia flag has been changed twice in the past 5-6 years. At least now the old confederate battle flag doesn't appear anywhere on our flag, instead we have the confederate political flag. Of course now instead we also have the words "In God we trust" on it, which seriously need to go.

How about incorporating a red dragon while we're at this political correct bollocks?

Aren't the biggest minority in the UK east Asians anyway...so we should really have some mucky brown colour on there rather than black.

Troll, my arse. I'm serious, so stop attempting to denigrate any opinion that differs from your own.

St Andrew was Greek. Padraig was what you might call Welsh (a nation who's flag is not on the Union Jack), and the fact that the Turkish George may have existed doesn't hide the fact that everything he's commemorated for here is an act of fiction. He wasn't even our original patron saint- the very real St Edward was.

And as for the singular/plural nature of the Acts of Union? What's your point? The fact that there was more than one means they weren't acts of English imperialism?

I'm English so you get an English viewpoint. Live with it.

I think you've touched a salient point there, Rothy. If getting fits of the vapours about immigrants, getting panicky about gays, feeling that one's worth is largely governed by what county one originates from, and thinking lefties are best off in Dachau constitutes Englishness then I'm probably a poor excuse for an Englishman.

Then again, only one of us is desperate to **** off to live in another country. Know what I mean?

Laz, the reason I thought you were trolling was the English arrow in the Frenchman's head bit.

King Harold wasn't French, and the arrow fired wasn't English - see my point?
