Some find them beyond bland (cookie-cutter), others find them refreshingly real with awesome songs in general. It depends what you look for in music.
Regardless, their debut was the best selling rock album of the 90s (at least -- that's what I heard, worldwide it sold something like 17M copies?), and it was still high on the billboard charts when 2000 rolled around. But it never peaked higher than #3.
