Because they're the ones ensuring the future of the human race - and doing it in the most socially acceptable way.
I could bang on about kids from marriages being "better" than single parent/gay parent families but I won't go there.

you know, why is it so hard to make people just accept the following:
1. people will love particular people, regardless of gender.
2. in cultures where monogamy is a socially accepted norm, couples will eventually want an exclusive, monogamous relationship.
3. in said cultures, there is most likely a legal system set up to help said exclusive, monogamous relationships.
4. said legal definitions and structures should be non-discriminatory towards sexuality, ethnicity, belief structure, etc, and should be upheld no matter what the nature of exclusive, monogamous relationships are. meaning, marriages should mean any exclusive, permanent monogamous coupling for a pair, be they mf, ff, or mm. common law would be the same as above, only occuring after a certain time period (7yrs, i believe is the norm). so on and so forth.
really, there's no reason to discriminate, there's no reason to worry. people are people, and they ought to live their lives as they see fit, so long as they don't infringe upon others' right to live as they see fit.
let gay marriage exist. it's not hurting anyone else, is it?
Yes but that totally disrupts my plans to be married in the english garden of an aristocratic manor, with both of us in modern tuxes, my family seated on the right, his on the left, have a witness from the register's office observe, exchange rings with the words "With this ring" on the outside and "I thy wed" on the inside (white gold rings of course!), have the floral display be white roses, serve Vietnamese spring rolls to start followed by a choice between roast pork served on a bed of greens with roast potatos or salmon in a lemon and pepper sauce with stirfried bok choy and finish with a dessert of fresh summer fruits (this wedding shall be in July I say JULY!), and have Charlotte Church sing for us.
That's so gay.

It would be extremely useful in the UK. It should solve the house pricing problem by given people an incentive to move in together rather than live alone.

Bods, you seem to be insecure about the "groups" you belong to being undermined by others who are acheiving equality with your group, which threatens your *cough* dominance!
If gay people were allowed to be married, this whole thing would be irrelevant. This civil ceremony, could be viewed as equivalent to a marriage, in the eyes of the state at least, thus it is merely equal rights!
That can never be a solution to anything. The thought is despicable.
You seem to be advocating lesser rights for gay people, Its not despicable, I think its egalitarian, logical, sensible, and a pretty cool idea. Love conquers all, why not have a marriage system so that the state can recognise that. Do you not like gay people? Do you disapprove of homosexual sex? If so, why?

Is there such a thing as heterophobia in the gay community. I mean, are there some people who despise heteros, the same way there are some people in general (including a few on this forum) who despise gays ? Have you witnessed heterophobia, heard from it, or is it completely inexistant ?

I've only seen it on a few very rare occasions, and it was usually a lesbian, and it was always someone who had experienced horrible abuse at the hands of others. While the abuse may not have been directly related to sexuality per se, it was something that triggered a huge antipathy towards the "heterosexual oppressors."
Considering that is very much a straight world, it would be a practical impossibility for a gay person to go around hating heterosexuals. While a heterosexual could reasonably claim to be totally unfamiliar with homosexuals (at least as far as they were aware), the same simply cannot be said for a gay person, who is at the very least going to be dealing with straight parents, employers, colleagues, teachers, etc.
My best friends are predominantly heterosexual, including my current roommates and my best friends from high school and college. In that light, I would have no objection to a Straight Pride parade, so long as the participants were limited to the loving, wonderful people like the above, and not the pernicious troglodytes like Boddingtons.
