That upgrade looks just fine, Fez. An ATI Radeon 9700 or Radeon 9700 Pro powered graphics accelerator would sweaten it all. I don't recommend trying that old 9500 -> "9700" trick as it's not always working as known.

Well I got a compromise.. I will have to do a house inventory to get the CPU, motherboard and memory. The video card will have to wait till later.
And the 9700 is out of my price range.

Laid by who? I got somebody in my real life.. a great bf.. for goodness sakes.. this is the internet.. If you think this is the place to get laid.. you got some social problems..
And hell yes I want the 9800.. but my dad won't let me... he has to pay the $900 registration costs for my California school.. hey at least it won't be $5000 extra on that... since I am a resident.

So they are sending you off to California? And no, I don't believe that the internet is the place to find a partner, hence my joke. You've yet to grasp irony
I am seeing what is going to be around in 3 months time, I certainly intend to upgrade then...

Both Intel and AMD are releasing new cores in Sept/Oct.

That's what I thought myself...see the thing is, I have got to sort out some other financial stuff before I buy a new PC anyway, so I am looking around that time anyway...so I would probably make it one of those, price depending of course

Yes I am being sent to California.. but it is university time for me. On my own. You ever been on your own before?
English is not my first language.. please don't rub it in.

I think I should wait a bit longer too... you know what? I am going to Washington D.C in a few weeks time and I will shop there for things..
What kind of new cores are they releasing asher? I am neutral, no longer blindly following AMD.. if the CPU is in my price range I will look at it. But I still like AMD.. if Intel releases a good one in my price range, I might end up buying it.

Why the hell should I? I am a custom builder.. I don't just buy a whole new machine.. I buy the parts I like and the ones that are in my price range.

AMD will be releasing Athlon 64.
It's the first desktop x86-64 (64-bit) processor, it's essentially an Athlon XP 2.0 with 64-bit support and some other tweaks, including an embedded memory controller. That's good because it has very low latency to memory, it's bad because your memory interface is always tied to the CPU rather than the motherboard. So if you ever wanna upgrade your memory speed, you need to ditch both the CPU + Motherboard rather than just the motherboard. However, there's already 100+ errata for the Athlon 64 posted online, and it's been delayed for well over a year, so I'm personally wary of being an early adopter of it. Athlon 64 will be produced on a 130nm process, which means it'll most likely still be quite hot and power hungry.
Intel is releasing its Prescott Pentium 4 (it may be called Pentium 5). Prescott is based on the Pentium 4, but will double all of the cache (L1, L2). It also supported 64-bits, but Intel has disabled that until a 2004 server-version of the processor for political reasons. 64-bit support on the desktop is way premature, anyway. It also supports HyperThreading II (so multitasking performance will be far above the Athlon, just as it is now, and likely future games as well since devs are now doing HT enhancements), and it'll come with SSE3 (13 new instructions) and improved core design for better speed and more throughput. It also has minor tweaks like improved pre-fetchers (predicts what the CPU will need and loads it into the cache from RAM beforehand) and branch predictors (predicts which path the code will take in the CPU, and jumps ahead to try it). Since it's on the brand new 90nm process (with nifty stuff like strained silicon technology, which AMD doesn't have), it will be small (80mm2) and cool and overclock very well.
