Here is a really cool documentary on the battle of Hoth in the style of Ken Burns Civil War series.

The army was semi-screwed on Hoth, since they'd been counting on being able to soften up the rebels with a bombardment -- you gotta think that they weren't considering that they'd need a big army, seeing as how the Executor could have pounded the rebel base into dust. The admiral was an idiot.

Congratulations on the completely successful threadjack. This is only second to the time that KrazyHouse and I jacked some other thread into one about giant robots.

Nonononono. The greatest threadjack of all time was during the Apolyton election when I jacked Horsie's attempt to get newbie votes into a "give us information about yourself" thread.

If you haven't got anything useful to add about Imperial/Rebel warfare in particular the battle for Hoth then can you please go and spam a different thread?

Doubtful since they wanted to capture the base intact. Remember, Vader was scouring the galaxy searching for Luke at this point.

You'd think he could just reach out with the force and find him, apparently the power of even the Death Star is insignificant compared to the power of the force. If even Yoda had to hide by that Dark Side cave to hide his presence how did Luke manage it?

Or if Vader couldn't do it, surely the Emperor could.

Obi-wan was just sitting in a hut on Tatooine. I think just being hard to find is enough to escape Vader and the Empoerer. Otherwise, Vader still wouldn't be sent out on the occassional Jedi stomp during the height of the Empire.

Dry was right. The 4th panzer could have taken Stalingrad had it not been diverted. Also, it's a trick question in a way as it has two correct answers. Hoth also led the 4th panzer in an attempt to relieve the 6th army, encircled in Stalingrad. The force was too small and was stopped prior to Hitler diverting it from its mission, iirc 4 miles from the pocket. Hitler refused to allow the 6th to attempt to break out towards Hoth's 4th, or it might have worked. The 6th army perished in Stalingrad or in Stalin's work camps in the years following the war. Very few of the 6th army survived to ever see Germany again.

The thread was about General Hoth's 4th Panzer Army reaching Stalingrad, and not George Lucas's battle of Hoth.

All show and no go. Most of the best weaponry had been sold off by corrupted rebel "officials" or was inoperable due to incompetence or lack of spare parts. The only reason the rebels performed as well as they did was that the Empire had more pressing business elsewhere.
Nonsense; Home One alone was 3 km long, and almost twice as massive as a ISD II. The Mon Calamari Yards remained free of Imperial forces after the Empire was thrown out just after Yavin. The Alliance Leadership had to keep moving, and not stay at one place.

The Empire was woefully understrength for maintaining order. With an absolute minimum of 1 million systems under it's control, the Imperial Navy only had 25,000 ISD's at the time of the Battle of Endor. Most of the Navy was stationed in the Core Systems, while Mon Calarmari, out on the fringes, wasabvle to use it's isolation to it's advantage after the Imperials were thrown off. As a result, the Rebels drew much of their strength from the Outer Rim.
