I didn't know there was a men-only rule on the PGA tour. That's a tad unpleasant isn't it?

Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

Now Vijay sings tune of apology

              May 14, 2003

Vijay Singh said Tuesday he was sorry if his comment about Annika Sorenstam playing on the PGA Tour came across as a personal attack.

On Sunday, Singh said, "I hope she misses the cut" at the Colonial next week in Ft. Worth.

But after a practice round Tuesday for this week's Byron Nelson Classic in Irving, Texas, he said: "If it was an attack on Annika at all, I would like to apologize to her. It came out the wrong way."

Singh attempted to cast his remarks in a different light.

"I actually said if I miss the cut, I'd rather she miss the cut as well," he said. "I hope she missed the cut because I don't want to have a woman beat me."

On Tuesday, Singh said he would play with Sorenstam if both made the cut and were paired in the weekend rounds. But he said something would be wrong if the two were paired for the first two rounds because, as a past champion, he is drawn from a different pool.

"I was saying my category was different," Singh said. "If I was put with her, it means I wasn't given the right attention for my category."

Asked if he spoke for a majority of tour players, Singh said, "I speak for myself."

IMHO, professional sports leagues shouldn't be restricted to men. The best players should be allowed to play. But let's be honest here. Annika didn't qualify for the pro tour. She used her influence to get her on it. I agree with Tiger Woods that she should try and get on it legitmately. Let's also be honest here. If a woman could hit 70 home runs and bat .300; George Steinbrenner would sign her to play for the Yankees. It's not about sex, it's about skill.

While I agree with almost everything you said, I don't think she used her infuence to get on, she was influenced to do it. And while I too think she should have had to qualify like the rest of the men, I don't really have a problem of her using a sponser exception. They were created to help do things to raise interest for the media and at the gate. One couldn't dissagree that this isn't adding interest at both.

My opinion about her using her influence (its just my opinion BTW) is based upon what I've seen in the media. It's not very credible, but when presented with a variety of sources, seems like the reasonable conclusion. And if she gets clobbered, this will set back attempts for such ventures in the future.

If she gets clobbered, less tournaments will be willing to waste a sponsers excemption on a woman, and they'll then have to quallify like everyone else.

                      So, I don't see a problem.

Until 1961, there was a white men only rule.

Here's a tournament that without Tiger would barely be mentioned in the papers or on the radio. Now it will be covered and attended similar to a major. Cheezy, but slick.
