I believe in spankings (not beatings)...

Yeah, beatings are a crime .

Lectures aren't good because you're only saying things the kid doesn't care about. On the contrary, you have to have him understand and acknowledge why he was wrong.

Tough part this is. Definitely knowledge of why was THAT wrong is required. Here's why.

A kid that does something wrong, gets spanked hard (banned from TV, whatever), might grow up thinking the wrong way. He will not think that the thing he did was bad, he'll think about avoiding punishment. As a result, he will develop means (and get better and better at it) about how to make stuff so that parents don't notice. Easy.

Solver : I agree. I just don't think moralizing and authoritarian lectures are the right way to reach this goal. A parent has to make his kid interested in understanding why that was wrong. I don't think a kid will care about a lecture. My mother sure was more successful with me when she interactionally explained rather than when she unlaterally lectured.

Yeah, explanation is the best way, although sometimes lectures might work, depends on the person.

I just know stuff from experience. My parents told me what is wrong and why, so I didn't do bad stuff. My grandma always kept threatening me with all kinds of bad things he could imagine, so I tried my best to do something to her without her noticing .

Ah, but there is no such thing as bad.

However, I wouldn't commit a crime that I know I could get away with because the universe is complicated and chances it would catch up with me eventually or I'd follow up with a string of similar crimes that would increase the chances of getting caught exponentially. Bah.

              I know I did.

              In fact, I still do.

              What are we talking about?
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
