Aye, I mean fraternities mostly
ORANGE
please go to the picture thread and change your pictures.
They are posted in BMP format, which isn't saved in the cache, and takes up a bulk of bandwidth.
I have to wait 5 minutes every time I refresh the page. That is not cool.
If you want, I can send you jpeg versions of your files, so you can put them instead of the bmp files (choose EDIT -> Change Attachment)

A true story to show you what frats are like.
A friend of mine was teaching a course in feminism and ethics. A frat boy was part of the class (I don't know how he ended up there, perhaps it was a dare).
Anyway, to cut a long story short, all the students had to give a class presentation during the year and the frat boy volunteered to do the one on pornography. He was supposed to give a talk on the ethical issues involved (if any), but he turned up with his porn collection and proceeded to give an illustrated talk about his favourite stuff.
When my friend had him up on this, he seemed surprised, because he thought that was what he was supposed to do.
Jesus F*ck! What a wingnut?Only feebs vote.

Sigh. They're forgetting that youre in another country and don't know anything about the "culture".
I'll tell you from my POV.
Fraternities are for boys
Sororities are for girls.
What happens with them is that you supposedly belong to that particular club (insert three greek letters) and its supposed to be great and wonderful and that you'll be friends for life and that your social success depends on which fraternity or sorority you happen to belong to, or are able to get into.
As per usual sorority girls happen to hook up with fraternity boys.
The hazing, etc. its supposedly a "right of passing" or admission test to said groups. Kids take it because they assume their social success is at stake and there's the type of group of people they want to hang out with or become a part of.
So the drinking, parties, etc. becomes a part of the frat/sorority culture and its supposed to be cool because you're supposedly a privileged brat whos out there to have a good time.Deja Moo: The feeling that you've heard this bull before.

Re: Explain Sorrorities to Siro
Well, Siro, I will try to answer your questions as best as I can. I am not a member of a frat, but i know several people who are.
"why do people take the abuse (when there is)?"
They do it to fit in socially, to have a guaranteed group of friends to hang out with, to do things they think are fun, and for the party-related benefits.
"why doesn't official staff intervene in stuff like hazing / illegal activity?"
They try, and when something really bad happens they do put their foot down. But for the most part hazing is kept all hush hush and the people who are victims of hazing keep their treatment secret. Generally the fact that hazing occurs in fraternities and sororities is well known so those who would object to being hazed would not join.
"how did this begin and why?"
Don't know too much on the history of this, but they started in an earlier era as "elite" social clubs. Well, frats were in any case, sororities were started much later then frats.
"how was it? how similar is it to movie depiction?"
Well from what I hear, they do have the hazing, though that depends on what frat you are at. Depending where you join, you could either have Icy-Hot put on your testicles, be forced to drink, and their are some frats that even claim not to haze. The frat people I have talked to about frats claim the main stuff they do is just social type stuff, with also alot of community service they do. Most significantly for non-frat people, frats are often the ones organizing the party scene on campus.
here is an article about fraternity hazing, if you are interested:
