  • NAFTA Years Later

Does anyone now doubt that the US 'free trade ideology' is only a sham for getting them preferential treatment?

    What products will be next?

Is Canada going to be forced to remain 'hewers of wood and drawers of water'?

'Drillers of oil'. Shouldn't forget 'drillers of oil'.

    Also, 'tappers of maples'.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

A petition with 400 signatures is calling for a duty on all Canadian wild blueberries, not just those from Quebec.

You Canucks are getting upset about a petition that has only garnered 400 signatures? Jesus, I know it's boring up there, but there must be better ways to spend your time than *****ing about non-existant American slights.

This reminds me of French strawberry-farmers who were pissed by the more cost-efficient Spanish ones. IIRC, nearly all strawberries in French supermarkets are now from Spain though.

                It helps no one.

                U.S. manufacturing is down.
Mexico has border towns over-crowded, lacking sufficient water, housing, etc.
Canda, in the past, mandated corporate headquarters must be in Canada.

So if all 3 countries in North America are suffering from it, it's hard to find good points.

                NAFTA blows.

                  NAFTA is great!

                  Everybody's doing huge business.

In the last 10 years, our imports from Canada have more than doubled, while our exports have almost doubled. We import $236 billion worth of goods and services from Canada each year.

                      Free trade is good.

A free-trade zone has to potential of being great if there is a common policy behind, with a supranational authority on economic concerns.

Otherwise, a free-trade zone is simply equivalent to the strongests stripping the other countries of their only protection.

There is a reason why the staunchest defenders of free trade have always been the richest countries.

The numbers don't lie, Sloww. We're all making out like bandits on this deal.
