Wow. Taking the piss out of oneself is so much easier than I first imagined...
"Love the earth and sun and animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown . . . reexamine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency" - Walt Whitman

You have confused Socialism with Communism.

Read Stefu's post again. Socialism has 3 billion different definitions depending on who you ask (ok, that might be a small exaggeration... but only small ).

Iain: I wouldn't pin you as someone who'd quote Reagan .
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Then take a look at The Netherlands, it's standard of living is comparable and they've adopted many socialist principles.

There's absolutely no reason why Socialism and Capitalism can't coexist in the same society. Though a better term would be Social Democracy. Some things can be done better by the market, others are by the government. It's just a question of experimenting to find the right balance.

And as for the US having a better standard of living than Scandinavia, that all depends on what side of the economic fence you're on. The poor in America can be very poor indeed. The gap between the two extremes is wide, more so than many European countries, as well as Canada. We're heading for a Social Democratic society as well.

Canada. Our tax rates aren't that much higher than the US overall, and in some sectors are lower. We've had to keep them fairly low in order to stay competitive with the US. Granted we don't have a huge military force, but as someone mentioned, it's a matter of priorities. We've decided that it doesn't make a lot of sense spending billions on something that only kills people and destroys infrastructure, we'd rather devote those resources to our people.

Actually, there is. Ceteris parabus, people prefer socialism to capitalism, and it tends to beat capitalism at its own game. That's why capitalists have had to rig the game. When push comes to shove, they will toss the game board or take all the pieces and go home or simply shoot the other players.

In any argument there are the two extremes, and the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Maoism/Stalinism/Marxism are one extreme, the laissez faire approach of the US is the other. Somewhere in between we'll find the ideal societal model. We just need to have the courage to experiment until we find the right balance.
