If ya'll are quite finished thread-jacking my thread and turning it (predictably) into a pro vs anti-war pissing contest...

Is anyone gonna TRY to answer my unbiased question:

With both this latest incident and the one on Monday...where are the imbedded media in all this?
The cake is NOT a lie. It's so delicious and moist.

I'm not quite clear as what do you mean?

Did the imbedded media not cover this?

Whereas they had photos alll over the place with iraqis suurrendering (and critisizing the iraqis for doing the same with american prisoners ) ?

Could you explain what you mean?

U.S. troops opened fire on anti-American demonstrators for the second time this week as Iraqis marched Wednesday to protest the previous shooting.
That has a certain gallows humor.

Where is the camera footage AS IT HAPPENED? Have any unedited (riiight... ) footage been captured showing what happened at the begining of any of these protests? When the coalition forces "declared victory" in Baghdad, did the imbedded media just pack up and leave, leaving whoever WASN'T imbedded with the troops to cover events in Iraq?

It's my understanding that the "imbedded media" were journalists walking side-by-side with the troops. If they're still doing that, have any of them caught these protests as they started, showing what happened?

oh yeah, I agree but it is expected. Sorry for thinking this question as being a bit naive.

At least the iraqi minister had some entertainment value.

Of course they packed up and went home. The war is over, at least the good stuff like blowing up buildings, firing big cannons and missiles (stuff that is great for ratings cause people love seeing things blown up real good). There's no frontline so how can the famous reporters demonstrate their bravery to the world?

                      Iraq is yesterday's news.

Did you really think that Fox or CNN would keep lots of reporters with the US troops doing occupation, whoops, I mean policing duties. Come on. That's boring, boring, boring.

Fox and CNN might have one journalist each in Iraq and that person is probably a freelancer.

Of course they packed up and went home. The war is over, at least the good stuff...
Interesting, considering the war has not yet been declared officially over.

There's no frontline so how can the famous reporters demonstrate their bravery to the world?
Funny, I thought in journalism reporting news was the frontline and everything else was just the background din. Of course then again, in recent months/years TV newscasters have found it increasingly appropriate to interject their OWN interpretations and opinions into reporting the news, so perhaps this opportunistic feeding...erm..."reporting" behaviour isn't all that suprising...and that much more disgusting.

Considering how much emphasis the Bush Administration is putting on "winning the hearts and minds" of the Iraqi people I would think it the best (re:most honest) policy to try to independantly record events to exonerate (sp?) US/UK troops of any wrong-doing. That means trying to keep the imbeds imbedded. Maybe not in the same numbers, but certainly in the same distribution or even more so. Unedited camera footage makes for far better eye-witness accounts than soldiers and civilians.

It's 3:30am and I've class later today. Off to bed with me... G'nite all.

For the media, particularly television, the war is over when the bombs stop falling on a predictable basis. No explosions = no war.

nah, nowadays "analysis" and added-value content is what is important. In other words, we'll just comment on what we think is happening. Much cheaper to interview talking heads from Washington then sending reporters into the fields.

What's different is not injecting their own interpretation. That's just the nature of the beast. When a reporter or editor decides to cover story A, but not story B then they are injecting their own interpretation into events. But that is unavoidable.

What's different now, compared to say 20 years ago, is the greater reliance on so-called neutral experts who interpret the news.

This is not always a bad thing. The "why" is often as important as the "what". People want to know how an event will affect their lives tomorrow.

The problem is the media increasingly relies on talking heads because it is cheaper. Saving money is the name of the game these days.

No it doesn't. Camera footage is just one tiny perception of a big event. Video images can make a largely peaceful protest look like a massive riot by focusing on a few violent people. Or it could make a small protest look huge.

I think they apply "rag-head" to any country where the men wear a turban - ie arabs, sihks and hindoos. What's a Sammie though?
