i noticed that when using the all-german version, i received english-speaking messages from my opponents.
also, when i heard that my opponents got partly german messages.
so i dont think that the settings work only for the player who has them.
I am sure you all have to have them, because I had "altered" CONST>TXT file..for a scenario..making my map like 180 X 360 and it would not allow other to join.

I am by far not an expert, but I also remember once leaving in the ruins.txt file where I made gold amounts higher in ruins and forgot, until the players stated no ruins yielded anything..thus alerting me to th fact..this was in a MP game..not PBEM..but I would imagine it to be the same.

    Peace

      • No volly needed... I am sure Math uses them with all the other players consent? because he is aware that modifying the game files without the other players knowledge is cheating and not allowed in PBEM.

That said modifications do apply to all players sometimes, depends on the modification and how it is done.

Although they will not work in MP for the most part, PBEM is another story.

        • i do NOT ask people specifically.
but they see when im using a custom civilisation.

as i said, just an additional civ and english text files.

maybe it was just my PC who was misbehaving...

          • Could be your PC as it is a very isolated problem.

Be careful with the modifications, if you have not informed players and moderators alike it could be viewed as cheating if the game shows odd behaviour. :0/

              • Have you tested your ram lately?
I have a great tester if you like email and I can send it to you? It is the first thing I would test. The test can show several things. If it comes up bad test it on another system. If it comes up good on the other system M.B. and power supply are next to test.

I can happen I just thought I would let you know :0)

                • you mean RAM can cause the program to behave so strange instead of just crashing ?

i'd be happy if you could send that tester to me:

                  • Absolutely, sure make sure your system boots to the "a" drive and let the test run.

As blackice said, but I feel I must emphasize - game file altering is very different in MP or PBEM. In MP differing files will usually cause an error at once - even if you don't get an immediate crash each player's version of CTP will do stuff according to its own rules, and if the results do not agree then you get an out of sync error and the host will retransmit to the other players, so basically the host's rules are the most important.

In PBEM, there is no problem with syncronisation, and alterations to the rules will just affect the events which occur on each players computer - note that the start of the next players turn happens on your computer, so your rules will affect them more than you, usually.

PBEM games are very resilient to differences, and alterations in mid-game. So long as you don't reduce the number of units/buildings/etc. the save will usually load (although very strange effects can ensue...).
