  • Why do I need to tell them anything?
I just say - 'we have been thinking of exploring the sea, if you feel like doing it too, here, Sailing for some cost (or even IOU) is yours.'.

If they take it before war, fine, they'll be soon dead anyway, if they don't take it even better.
No need to tell a word about validity of the offer or anything else related, when war starts the agreements are void.

    • yes, well, I don't know about you bt, but don't you think nobody will trust our *real* offers anymore after such a thing.

I'd rather be on bad terms with the bananas now then having all other teams being more suspicious about our offers.

When war starts the agreements are void

That really means agreements with us are not worth much, as we can turn against them at any time. On the other hand, if we don't attack anybody while we have some kind of agreement with them, it might make others more inclined to sign agreements with us.

I really care less about diplomacy with banana right now than about our image to the world after the war.

      • Erm, but how does it relate to trading Sailing or not?

TTT will be void once war starts and it is only logical.
Sailing trade will be either done or not when the war starts.
If not, too bad too late (and I really don't see a problem with credibility in this), if yes, it doesn't change our credibility in any way (or all the prior trades would too).

I'm ok with not trading Sailing but I disagree it would harm to offer it.

        • offer the carrot and when they show their head bash it with the stick is nice for not caring about diplomacy but we need to keep our continent happy so stall like they stall.

            • I see no problem in offering them sailing in exchange for something or an IOU (with them telling us immediatley if they contact someone else and where it happened as part of the price, for example... or even a galley or two), and if they accept, go ahead and give it to them... after all, they won't be able to do jack **** with it...

              • If you do offer them them something keep the offer and our reactions the same so they do not expect a deception.

                • message proposal (I copy-pasted some of bt's proposals in it)

[edit]I also added bt's comments from his post below[/edit]

The followers of the one Yang are equally pleased with the fruitfull friendship with the bananas. The openess of our borders has already brought a nice amount of gold to both of our countries.

We would gladly offer you some maps, but we think the only area we explored since the last time we sent you a map, is a little piece of your lands (thanks to our open borders). We also have the complete western coastline (upto GS' lands). Now we're trying to map the eastern coastline to see if there could be any overseas connections (coast) to other lands.

We have recently discovered the technology of Sailing as you already know and are planning to build some boats for exploration. We think that there must certainly be more lands and nations on the other side of the sea. The presence of multiple islands actually hints at the possibility that those lands are much less distant than one would think. If you are interested in this technology, to do some exploration too, you know we are open for tech trade offers.

I didn't know that. But does it really matter? We can always pretend to think they receive the same amount since it's not listed in our city screens like in SMAC.

                            • Alpha Centurians!
                              Homoj de Yang!
                              Amikoj de la Banano!

We are pleased that the trade road has crossed the Okcidenta Rivero (West River). It will be a good day when trade flows on this road between our nations. This is still a trade road - correct? We see axemen moving towards Lando de La Banano and some are concerned while others simply think it is prudent to protect your workers in the wilderness. Please confirn that your people come in amikeco (friendship). Do you know why Gathering Storm is so close to both of our lands? GS has always spoken of peace between our three nations.

I have attached a proprosal for the building of the next Lando de La Banano city. Early in our meeting, our people's talked of borders. We never signed an agreement except to honor eachother's culture borders. But the Homoj de La Banano have always considered the lands up to the Okcidenta Rivero as our frontier and the lands west of the Okcidenta, yours. So we thought it wise to ask what you thought of our intended site - the yellow circle with an 'A'. We plan too settle somewhere in the large triple-lined yellow box, maybe east of 'A' (6-6) or even as far as the 'B' box. We ask your input because we do not wish to offend our amikoj the Alpha Centurians.

Please reply soon as our settler is moving towards a site now.

                              my opinion to answer them

                              - assure its a trade road indeed, that there are reports of barbarians roaming the fields

                              - let them settle where we want our future city. give them some rabble about territory rights and trespassing rights to make it sound real.

                              - tell them that we have send GS a message to DEMAND that they back off our territory, and that we suggest they do the same.

If they fall for this and do it, their relations with GS will be screwed up before the war starts, and they won't get any support. Of course there is no such message

They also added a nice picture where we see the settler, two workers, one is working the copper but theres no mine or road on it.

                              • argh; we should have sent our message a little sooner.

                                Now it's useless to send...

If we don't answer this one soon enough, they'll have an other question before we can answer.

Is it ok if we send them this message right now :
                                Dear bananas,

We were doing the finishing touch on an answer to your previous message, about the civilizations across the seas. We were preparing our messenger to walk towards you with the message. Your new message talks about completely different issues.

We might still send our previous message to you, but we assure you a reply to your latest message will be coming too. Is that OK with you?
