In theory Crossbows are quite a bit better than Pikes because their worst-case battle is only versus strength 8 elephants versus strength 12 maces (with melee bonus) for a pike. My testing doesn't seem to bear this out though, and I see very similar averages with a crossbow upgrade or a pike upgrade. Both outcomes result in a noticeable improvement in the casualty ratio and inspire me to change my vote.
_____________
Upgrade costs:
*Axeman->Mace = 125
*Archer->Crossbow = 125
*Spear->Pike = 95
We will have 281 gold in the bank next turn, so we can unfortunately only afford 2 upgrades. I advise upgrading the axeman to a mace and one of the spears to a pike in Cape Town. That will easily leave enough case to upgrade another unit during turn 131.
Question: Should I go ahead and upgrade the spear to a pike this turn (Turn 129?)

Ok, I upgraded Hannah to a Pike in Cape Town.
As soon as the turn time roles over I'm going to see if the disputed tile flipped to us. If it did I'll upgrade a second spear to a pike in Cape Town (we'll have Turn 131 to do the axeman->mace upgrade). If the tile didn't flip I'll hold off on any upgrades and wait for discussion, but will suggest we do the axe->mace upgrade before the end of Turn 130 in preparation for battle on Turn 131.

Better to lurk civstats and see whether Imperio and/or Templars logs in around the end of the current turn. If they do so, and declare war right at the start of T130, then they've doubled moved us.

Turn 130 preliminary report:
*Disputed tile DID flip to us.
*Units in the open - 2 horse archers and 2 chariots have been moved inside Cape Town. The archer from Imperio's land is next to Cape Town. The Imperio horse archer could kill it, but I'm leaving it unguarded in hopes Imperio will be silly enough to sacrifice the HA to our pike. It's tempting to use our Engineering advantage to declare on Imperio this turn and hit their unprompted units, but I don't think that makes sense on the diplo level. Lets pray they walk into our land without promoting though.
I also left the Pink Dot spear in the open 2N of the city. Nothing can hit Pink Dot this turn, and we'll have first move on turn 131 to move him into Pink if Templars head that way.
*Worker actions - Did what Soooo said to do above. Thanks buddyI didn't see any instructions for John the Savage, so I put him in a forest near Something Fishy so he can chop. The only alternative thing he could have done this turn was start a cottage, and I think we need the hammers more.
*Unit upgrade - Upgraded another spear in Cape Town to a pike. We'll have enough gold to upgrade Cape Town's axeman to a Mace next turn.
*Builds - Cape Town, Airstrip One, and Something Fishy finished their builds. I queued up a cat in Cape Town, and horse archers in the other two cities, subject to discussion. Sadly, Cape Town CANNOT finish another cat in one turn, so we need to decide between a 2T cat or a 2T mace. I named the new cat Lilac, I hope that suits the theme well enough.
Colossus is done next turn. It was NOT built inter-turn.
*Great Scientist born in the cap. Left him there.
*To do later during the turnset - Whip Pink Dot, China Beach, and Green Acres.
EDIT: I do all of that and then forge to end turnFixed now.

Military SitRep
*Current RB stack: 3 Elephants, 2 Maces, 4 Horse Archers, 2 Pikes, 4 Cats, 1 Axeman, 2 Chariots, 1 Spear, 4 Archers (23 units)
*Current Imperio stack: 3 Elephants, 2 Maces, 1 Horse Archer, 5 Longbows, 7 Cats, 1 Holkan, 2 Chariots (21 units)
Note we have identical numbers of strength-8 and strength-6 units. We will likely have one additional cat and one additional mace (and one fewer axeman) when the battle occurs.
Current RB Total Unit Strength: 121
Current Imperio Total Unit Strength: 123
Expected RB Total Unit Strength: 129
