  • I think a settler+archer in a boat has a high chance of success in terms of Imperio not blocking it, but it will still be a lot of work building the boat and units, and then shuttling over workers. The resources are probably better spent on military units at home helping us settle our last border city more quickly. As such, I also favor barracks in China Beach.

    EDIT: I also suspect PAL will kill any settlement we build on "their" island.

    • Barracks at China Beach is fine by me.

      However, I think we should give serious thought to establishing a silver colony on PAL's island. If PAL responds aggressively, we can use this to turn Imperio and Templars against them to try to freeze them out of trading. Given that there's a lot to consider (investment in the city, worker turns, risk, etc.) then I suggest to move this discussion to the strategy thread.

      • I logged in just to see what was going down. I selected literature as our next tech and a barracks in China Beach since I think that was the majority decision. I also hired 2 scientists in that city. No units were moved. I also haven't offered a trade yet. They have mathematics (357 beakers) and monarchy (429) available, we have aesthetics (429) and monotheism (171). I believe the plan was to get mathematics for better chopping. What do we think of offering a 2-for-2 trade. The beakers is in our favour, but we could send an email saying we owe them some beakers and will agree to make a trade in their favour in the future. Will be very nice if it works out, I think it is worth a try.

        • They haven't even agreed to Aestetics for Math emailed offer, so they are unlikely to accept unbalanced trade. And we really need Math before we start chopping.

          EDIT: Since we tried to offer Aestetics for Math in email already, let's make the offer in game.

          Comment

          • They might not have agreed because they haven't gotten round to replying yet. They still haven't revolted to slavery yet so I doubt they're really on the ball. I just thought it was worth a try to make the double trade, if they don't agree then we can just do the agreed trade.

            Comment

            • If we do the Aestetics for Math trade now, we can do Mono+Literature for Monarchy trade as soon as we discover Literature. (No need to tell them how quickly we are planning to finish Great Library. ) I just don't think they are likely to take a trade that puts them at a disadvantage in beakers.

              • I am pretty sure that the game will allow this ... offer 2 for 2 trade then offer aest for math trade. If they accept the first, then the 2nd one becomes pointless. If they reject the first, then the they might accept the second - might want to include some comments about the double offer and / or email.

                • Here is a thought, why Saxon is not growing to size 2.
                  It is going worker first to hook up the deer.
                  IN which case we have to decide what we do,
                  wait for worker to finish, wait for Saxon to grow, take it.
                  Or wait for worker to finish, take the city at size 1 and take the worker. Would need a settler to re-settle.

                  • Why wouldn't taking the worker and the city be the best option?

                    Comment

                    • I've never seen a barb city build a worker at size 1 - I highly doubt that is what's happening. I suspect it is working a low-food tile.

                      • While I appreciate the enthusiasm for the game, it's a little disconcerting to have to figure out what was moved around before I even start the turn. In the future, could I possibly request at least 12 hours for the turn player to get to the save before making changes? Believe me, I'm all for tinkering around with stuff - just try not to get me any more confused than I already am! Thanks.

                        Here we go for T98:

                        - Start with China Beach, since that was the most interesting location domestically. sooooo correctly assigned the two Scientist specialists, and the consensus seemed to be a barracks build. (I still don't think this is the best option, but am more than happy to go with the team opinion.) We do have a choice though - do we work the clams resource or the cattle one?

                        The city gets 19 beakers/1 shield with the clams, and 16 beakers/4 shields with the cows. I say we should go with the clams for at least the next three turns, as we are currently in research mode and can use the extra beakers. After that, as we approach the happy cap, we can go over to the cattle for extra shields. (We can work both plus the two scientists once we get into Hereditary Rule!) Thoughts?

                        - More info from the Eastern continent:

                        Sharon is going to move along the red arrow next turn. The giant yellow arrow is pointing to a PAL city that was revealed this turn! Looks like PAL settled right up next to the border with Rabbits, then cut the dogs loose. Also note that we have an open trade route to Banana, even though we have not met them as yet. Interesting.

                        - I proposed the Aesthetics for Mathematics trade in-game with Imperio. Hopefully they'll accept it. Imperio discovered a new tech this turn, so now we know what they were researching. And it wasn't Aesthetics or anything like that, it was...

                        - Construction. OK, major danger signs here. Imperio now has Construction for cats, plus they are still getting ivory from PAL in exchange for one of their gold resources. I also have to mention, for what it's worth, that Imperio has increased their Espionage point spending against us in the last two turns. *sigh* Why does this feel like one of the games where all of the AI civs gang up on you?

                        We are going to need to watch this EXTREMELY closely. If they come after us with a combined uberphant/cat stack, we are in deep trouble. Might have to go for Horseback Riding soon, as horse archers are the best way to stop catapults via flanking attacks. We also should ring up PAL soon and ask them to stop trading ivory to Imperio, if there's any way at all we can get them to do that. Maybe offer them a sweeter deal (with wines/silks) instead?

                        C&D will be able to let us know exactly what units Imperio has, which will be our only advantage...

                        - PAL's GNP increased enormously last turn (59 -> 87), for reasons I don't understand. Any thoughts, mh?

                        - Betty Hur is moving to the barb city, and will pick up her 10th XP shortly. Then we can get started on Heroic Epic in one of our cities right after discovering Literature. (Hopefully Saxon will grow to size 2 so we can capture it soon too!)

                        - Workers are ready to start chopping the forests at Airstrip One as soon as we get Mathematics. Great Library is still on target.

                        That's all for now. Again, if anyone can determine how to upload images to Apolyton's new forums, PLEASE let me know. I'm hosting these pictures on my own website, and I don't like wasting the server space. Thanks.

                          Foreign Builds from C&D

                          Templars
                          Jerusalem = (69 * (148 + 100)) / (3 * 575) = 10 shields (+10)
                          Jericho = (153 * (148 + 100)) / (3 * 550) = 23 shields (+5)

                          Not much going on here, although Jericho's growth to size 2 allows it to make 5 shields/turn instead of 2/turn. For whatever reason, Templars are running zero growth and working the forested plains hill tile.

                          Imperio
                          Mutal = (194 * (123 + 100)) / (3 * 517) = 28 shields (+9)
                          Lakamha = (471 * (123 + 100)) / (3 * 530) = 66 shields (+20)
                          Chichen Itza = (67 * (123 + 100)) / (3 * 503) = 10 shields (+2)
                          Uxmal = (73 * (123 + 100)) / (3 * 544) = 10 shields (+4)

                          My guess is that Lakamha is on settler currently. That or some kind of wonder with doubling resource...

                            Compare to this turn's screenshot:

                            From reading the disputes thread, the PAL city is Heliopolis. Now their conversation is starting to make sense!
