Well, I diverted from the tundra hill because of a hut. The villagers gave us ....

    a map.

Our start position could be better. We were last to play so a new turn has begun.

Would have been nice to get something more substantial from the hut, but the map info is good to know. We seem to be in a not-so-great part of the world, lots of plains tiles. (No disagreement with sooooo on that evaluation). We do have some secure back lines though, always a plus. There's room for at least four cities on our peninsula, if not five.

I assume that we'll want to beeline the early settlers south first, into contested lands. Obviously we need more map info first.

Lots of forests, a river system, two fresh water lakes and six different food resources. We are save on the health side I would say.

It would be nice to have a gold or gems nearby for happiness, as I don't see us winning any of the early religions.

I suggest scout goes 1SE onto the hill and then shortest way to the area around the rice, or does someone think it is worth delaying going south to check out the last tundra tiles in the far north?

Btw. It seems the game is down again.

Yep, the game is down, which is unfortunate timing since snoopy is away until Tuesday. No turn until then.

The game is back up and our turn is played. Here's a proposed route to the south:

This path gives us a higher chance of losing the Scout to a Bear, but it will reveal the foggy tile SW of the Cow (across the gulf):

                  @Ruff:

How do you get the map to zoom out so far without the clouds appearing and the details going away?

PS - I miss BlueMarble so much.

You've got to go into your .ini file and change allowcameraflying to be equal to 1. Then reload the game, CTRL + ALT + F to enter cameraflying mode.

                    P.S - BlueMarble is horrible!

                      No, it's wonderful

Seriously, to each his own of course, but at least you get your choice. I had to uninstall BM because I was getting "non identical game files" messages in multiplayer games. I wonder if the camera flying setting will cause the same problem.

I take it this due to the fact that we will move onto a hill on turn 2 and not a forest?
But is there not a small number of guaranteed wins against barbs for the lower difficulty settings?

Even if, not I am in favor of the blue route.

It's also that the forest has only 1 non-forested tile next to it, so 2-move animals can only attack from one direction. The hill has 3 unforested plains, which increases the number of squares that an animal could start the turn on and attack.

                          No, I don't think so.

Revealing 1 more tile is not worth putting our scout at more risk, surely guys? We can reveal that tile whenever we want. Losing the scout would be a minor catastrophe.

I am pretty sure I read it the other day, but cannot find it again now.
Unless someone can confirm that go for the safe option.

According to the first entry in his excel table the first fight against barbs on prince is a guaranteed win.

Hmm...I knew lower difficulties had a bonus against barbs, but didn't know about the guaranteed win. I guess it's only a guaranteed win if you have some strength right? So a worker or settler is still at risk?

                                I guess so.
Also, if this holds true, we only get one win.
There is also no guarantee the unit will not be redlined.
So, another attack will kill the scout.
I therefore revise my earlier vote and back up sooooo's route for max safety.

btw. Sunrise, will we see a RBTS6B post from you? :-)
