  • Barracks, stables and castles comes to mind.

And on the map we play now it might be at some point worthwhile to have a fort on the landneck south of Diggers Burrow and the desert peninsula.

Walls, some of the later stuff, too. But I don't know it all that well as games rarely last into the later stuff.

A couple wonders do as well. Or did in Warlords. Great Wall for sure, thought there were a couple others. I'ld guess any giving espionage points or military benefits will in BTS.

And, I still wouldn't waste time with a fort...

      • If things ever get to a point where naval power is a key ingredient and the terrain demands and allows it, a fort can be quite an effective thing. Other than its use as a water passage, however, I have found very little utility for them.

        • Please understand when I say agree to their original offer I am not talking about being sheep. We should take the time to leverage our advantage. When we get to Landsknecht their War Chariots will be totally moot. When we have our Rathaus we can maximize our expansionist trait.

As FeMme points out we need to phrase our questions carefully. Maybe they are on the southern tip of our island. Boats are definitely in order. The question becomes exactly where in the build order.
Yes, negotiations could take some time.

          • Femme...

are suggesting that we can't discuss among ourselves here within our own civ in the privacy of our own forum the relative integrity of other teams?

The idea you have regarding the possibilty that the other team(s) they are in contact with being on a close island is a good one and I'm glad you put it forward because I hadn't thought of it and now I can see it. It should also help our team determine the integrity of any reply from PAL...

"One thing I've noticed from past relations with PAL is that they are extremely proficient in 'reading' the demographic screen. From this they can determine what techs, units and resources other teams have among other things. Something to keep in mind."

That's really interesting! Do you know their method? Can you discover whether they have sailing by looking at the demographics?

            Geo...

so if it's 2/2 for them then that means one other civ, yes? If they knew 4 civs it would be 1/1/1/1, yes? Three cis would be what? 2/1/1? Or 1.33/1.33/1.33?

I guess my question is, how accurate can we get with this? Also, I feel like I'm reading their mail with such info. Great espionage.

"The kind of techs researched can be figured out by the score jumps on a new turn (the score goes by era IIRC). Power strength increases can be determined by the number of extra soldiers in the power graph, since most unit classes have a specific number of 'soldiers' in them in the game background. On resources I have no idea, besides the diplomatic screen which is pretty much straight forward."

            Wonderful.

Keeping track of this would be a pain, but any general impressions any of you guys get might guide us in our strategy.

            PLATO...

I don't think I've ever built a fort in Civ IV. I always forget that boats can pass through them these days. :senile: Do you know if forts can be strung together for a long canal?

            Chuckman...

When should we put a boat in the build order?

Distribution of available espionage points is selectable by each player (team). One could, if they so wish, assign more points to a nearby neighbour, and less to a distant one. Or all points to one neighbour until certain info is available etc, and then switch to go all out on the next most important civ etc.

How espionage points are divided up are all part of the strategy, and will have to be addressed when we bump into the next civ..........

Thanks Rob. I really appreciate you guys sharing your knowledge. I can't wait to get back to the Phils and fire up the game with this new info to work with. I think I'll see it in a whole new light.

I believe that they actually have to touch a water tile for this to work. In otherwords, we could use two to build a canal, but nothing more. I think the only exception to this is if you have a city in between the two, then you could actually do 3 tiles.

                    • Just in form Whip[lash of PAL.......

                      Hi Team Rabbit,

After much deliberation, we believe we have come up with a solution that both parties will be happy with. We are willing to let your scout pass our borders as a gesture of good will. But we would like to further strengthen our relationship by proposing a tech trade.

I’m sure team rabbit are just as eager as PAL to get monarchy, without delaying alphabet; so how does this sound:

Masonry + writing + alphabet for Meditation + priesthood + Monarchy.

If you are willing to tell us what techs you currently have, we can come up with something even more beneficial.

We are in the process of researching Masonry, and can provide a list of all the techs we currently have if required.

                      What are rabbit’s thoughts?

                      • Well, we already have Masonry IIRC (that's the tech that makes quaries available, isn't it?).

So, if we want to go along with this kind of trade, we better tell 'm fast we already have it.

Can we now move our scout into his area? I think we can. At the same time replying 'We're all for tech trades but we already have masonry.' What will you give us for it or some such?

                          • Tech trade sounds good. But as Geo said we need to tell them we have Masonry and that they need to research something else.

                            • I agree Zoid. Thing is, his whole strategy as far as I can see is to sit in the middle between two Civs and trade our techs for the guy on the other sides techs. This is why he wanted to hold our scout at the border. So if he can't hold us at the border then he has to try to get the tech trades done before our scout meets the other guy. In order to end up with a better end result we need to directly trade with the guy on the other side while at the same time trading with PAL. It is in our interests to not let PAL broker our techs to others imo...

So do we trade masonry for something to keep him on the line while our scout runs like hell to meet the other guy?

                              Is that correct reasoning?

                              • I think we need to make contact with whoever's on the other side asap. We don't want to bolster PAL's points too much... So trading Masonry with vague promises of future trades and then run like hell to the other side seems like a good idea
