Well, Attempt # 3 is in the mail now. Let me know if it still doesn't work....

aryonis,
Try using this MP loading method that we had to use in one private PBEM game when almost nothing worked correctly.
I have used it ever since in PBEM games and have had much less problems.
Detailed instructions :
Launch PTW
Select Multiplayer
Set Location to Local.
Click on Host
Under Game Type, select Play By EMail
Under Game Mode, select Load Game
Load the current save
Click on Launch
Do your turn
Click on the End Turn Oval
Save the Game
Ayronis, if you still can't open the file tonight maybe we should try with another PC and just "next" your turn? I'm wondering if there is possibly an interaction with your install? Not likely, but you never know...I've seen stranger things on PC's.
I'm sure Gyromancer could cover the map, "next" the turn and then send it to Random Passerby. That might solve the issue. Since you've got mod priveleges, you would be able to change your personal password on the next round.

Hmmmm. Well, I changed LOTS of preferences this time around. Of course it could have been the ~magical~ "save as a new name" thing.
I worry about the ultimate stability of a game's interaction with my hard drive if it can get confused between saves that are already there and those that are being created. Of course I've been worried about that since CIV3 day 1, when the install program stalled out at 90% for lack of DISK SPACE. (No warnings, no internal checks, not even a graceful exit) Maybe we should send the programmers a copy of the Windows API for Christmas?

Seems like with PTW saves, sometimes you have to almost stand with your head and type with your feet to make it work A patch would be more then welcome. Glad it finally worked though
For completeness, here is a list of what I tried:
With both the first save and the second I tried loading on both my desktop and laptop without success. On my laptop I tried loading from the multiplayer screen, as per Conqueror's suggestion here, that didn't work either.
Only when I recieved the third save (with the an interesting combination of preference settings ) did it work. This third file also contained a different filename from the previous two.
Thanks to everyone for their patience, and to Conqueror for his technical help.

Does that year look strange to anyone else? I usually don't pay attention to the years this early on, but it seemed a bit strange.
Let me know if the save file corruption reappears....

The years go first 50 yrs/turn until 2750 bc, then they change to 40 yrs/turn. I cant remember where it was that the years per turn shortens even more. Maybe around 1000 bc.
