    I think the more important point is that you can only have 8 civs on the board. Admittedly this is better than 7 but I think a LOT of players were hoping to be able to have more opponents on the board. This is even more desireable with larger maps.

    BTW, I hope they've extended the maximum number of existing cities as well.

    As to the number of opponents to choose from, I can see how it would be very time consuming for them to create animations and custom unit graphics, city styles, atmospheres, changes through the ages, etc. for a whole lot of different civs. However, I think it was very short sighted to limit the interface to only allowing you to choose from 16 civs. Heck, just offering 6 fleshed out civs plus the tools to add your own new ones would have been great.

      Note that Sioux have been replaced with Iroquois.
