Sounds like it's a hotseat game you're talking about... You don't need to be several players to be able to play hotseat games (And the seat doesn't get hot, if you play all the civs )

Most people with their home nations as Civ's will be played the most. ie I usally end up as English.
That's not my case (Sure, Denmark wont be in the game... )...I proberbly wont play the Vikings much (Unless the random thingy hits the Vikings often of course...)
I rarely play anything other than the Chinese or Persians. I have gotten so used to building roads in a turn that I can't stand anything but industial civs. I have never played as the Japanese or the English. I guess I have something against them.
I make a point of playing them all. I would probably pick the Americans for worst UU though. Staring a Golden Age is tricky, like a couple games ago when I went to war with a small neighboer to start a GA, and they only had 5 bombers. It worked, but that's not as conveinent as the other UUs.
I have never played as India, America and France, and I will propabily never will, perhaps with the exception of France.
I have played as the Zulus, the English, the Babylonians and the Germans but I do not find them matching my gaming style. I never pick them, unless I have chosen the random option.
The rest, like the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Aztecs and the Persians are all excellent civs with which I always feel confident while playing!

This is because my style of play is to expand rapidly at the start and the scouts allow me to do that. England is the bset on a archipegilo map cause of the Man-O-Wars allow me to successfully stop any futher enemy expansionism overseas. I like thwe Iriquois because of their mounted horses allow me to run rough shod over an early neighbour who happens to be in the way, and with the Americans, well I don't really play them so often cause I don't like em
Don't tell a twisted person he is twisted, he may take offence. (THAT MEANS ME!)

Nesing, come and see what its about in the Stories and Diplomacy threads.
I really find the industrius strength most usful. It really gives me an edge. Commercal is usful with large, spraling empires, Religious is usful in cutting down turns of later anarchy and Scientific is OK, I usally do not need 2 free advances per age. They allways seem to be really usless. The others seem to suck.
How can you defeat an enemy which will never accept defeat?
