All right, I wasted a weekend trying to set more standards. Alas, all I have to show for it is a pair of very beatable results. Because they aren't impressive, I'll skip the play-by-play.

Independent Greeks: All objectives (except Raphia, which got razed) in 92 years. I didn't bother continuing to get all additional cities. The blasted Romans got steam engine 3 turns after me! They had gunpowder, too. No civs eliminated...

Ptolemaic Greeks: All objectives (except Pella, which got razed) in 96 years. Reaching La Tene took a whole decade! Didn't get all cities, but only the Celts and Romans remained on the map.

Marquis, IMO you cannot waste anything playing civ2!
(and you should remember that, when I started this thread a few weeks ago, no one except myself had beaten the century, ... and that was with caravan rehoming)
      ALL RESULTS ARE BEATABLE
(except high scores by Ming = too boring , launching SS with one city size one by samson = too serious , landing sooner than solo = caravan rehoming now forbidden ).

While squashing the Romans, Vercingetorix looks at his shiny new wristwatch. "Good heavens! Is it 198bc already? We have only 20 years to sack Egypt!" Antioch has fallen, the musketeers and cannon are sailing toward Damascus and Carthage. They should be celtic in just a few years. Those foolish Egyptians have still not built walls around Raphia, maybe Damascus can wait. But then how long will it take to reach Seleucia? It looks as tho the ironclad will enter the scene too late, time to rush build more cannon! Hurry, hurry! Meanwhile, the clock continues to tick...

The Celts win the challenge! 99 years for all objectives. Vercingetorix, ruler of all Mediterranean lands, has submitted this timeline for Apolytoners' perusal. While the Seleucids and Macedonians were left with several cities each, another ten years would have seen an end to that. The ironclad strategy did not seem like a good approach, as the Celts are so landlocked at the start, so they chose the muskets and metallurgy route. The record of conquest and 3-figure gold transactions:

            278 Celtic start
269 Delphi (left Pella alone on the first turn)
            267 Abdera
            266 Miletus
            256 150g from Macedon
            254 Pella
            252 Massilia
            249 100g from Carthage, 300g from Seleucids
245 400g from Ind. Greeks for peace (silly fools)
            241 Demetrias for 149g
            240 gems --> Syracuse 140g
            238 Athens 848g
            234 Caralis
232 250g from Ptolomies, 250g from Seleucids, 175g from Ind. Greeks
            231 175g from Ind. Greeks
            228 250g from Ptolomies
226 250g from Ptolomies, metallurgy discovered
            223 silk --> Rhodes 330g, hides --> Rhodes 292g
            221 Pisae
220 Gades, 225g from Ind. Greeks
            217 Sena
            214 Rhodes, Pergamum
            210 silk --> Seleucia 135g
            205 Syracuse
            202 Rome
            199 Antioch
            198 Lilybeum
            197 Terracina
            193 Neapolis
            191 Carthage
190 Rahpia, Hippo Regius on sale for 343g (got 407 back!)
            189 steam engine discovered
            188 Alexandria, Heraclea, Romans eliminated
            187 Heliopolis 504g
186 Taras, Ind. Greeks lose independence
            185 Leptis
184 Damascus (tough nut to crack)
            183 Cyrene, Saragossa
182 Memphis, Swazi, Carthaginians relegated to history books
179 Seleucia!, Valladolid for 384g, Bilbao for 284g, Ptolomies wiped off the map, 12,000,000 celts.

Special congratulations: even the poor celts have now beaten the century!
Now are only the smiling Macedonians left.

Played Celts for several turns. This is interesting. I have only encountered one barb legion after tipped off a lot of huts. I got at least 5 techs (including invention), 2 cities, 3 wandering nomads, and several units. Is that because that my power was pathetic? Could never build any wonders.

                    Sure it should!
I swear I won't try to beat him if he has a try.
But I suppose he's so busy managing us that he never has even
5 minutes left to tip a hut.

Are you telling us that you are tipping huts in the Rome scenario?
I suppose that many of us would be very happy to know what Xin Yu achieves when playing Celts, ...
but AFAIK there are no huts in that scenario

I think it was DaveV who remarked that the Rome scenario has huts in MGE - none in 2.42 ...

By the way La Fayette - now that you have UCC you might take a look at the 'Napoleon' scenario that comes with Fantastic Worlds. We looked at it very briefly last night - seems kewl ...

                          ..
It seems that my tiny Hall of Fame is going to need growing:
7 civs with and without huts means 14 names on the board
(I suppose it would be very unfair to compare results obtained with and without huts)
Therefore, Dave, EOL, Marquis, please let us know whether you tipped huts or not

I tipped huts, as I play in MGE.

189: Philip of Macedon takes La Tene and Milan.
                              All objectives Macedonian.
This means 89 years (without tipping huts ).
The challenge of beating the century is now beaten by all 7 civs in the Rome scenario.
A nice Hall of Fame will be established when we know which results were obtained with and without hut tipping.

No huts. I usually use 2.42 but have FW as well.
