        how large a mongol army?

do we have the firepower to pimp slap the mongols and ***** slap the celts back to the stone age? though i suppose the answer is "no" or else they wouldn't be problems right now

There are 3 Cavalry, 1 Cannon, and at least 3 more unidentiable units. This does not look good...

We need to bribe one of the calvary surrounding Naples in order to save the city. That is the only way I can see to save that entire peninsula and repulse the mongol attack.

I don't know if we can stop the celts.
One idea is to create a diversion with the engineer to slow the calvary down until the calvary in the city can recover.

              It looks very bad though.

Will be posting my regular report, as well as a poll for fundraising so that we can bribe at least one of the offending calvary.

I'm going to suggest something unpleasant. Abandon Kazan. Move our units out, sell what we can, destroy the production. Consolidate our position in Naples with the military units from Kazan.

The current position at Kazan is "Custer at the Little Bighorn"; I don't see a viable win there. At Naples, we have both Barracks and City Walls, and we have numerous units.

Our goal is to get the SS, not to control territory. If we can keep the AIs occupied at the periphery and get our SS launched, we win this game. We can "lose" this battle and win the war by focussing the attention of the AIs on the territories we don't really care about..

Meanwhile, we need gold. Trade from the home island can do that while we still progress to our goal. Gold will allow us to bribe where required and buy things we need.

Well, hindsight is 20:20, of course... but having walls in Kazan would have helped

I say, use whatever offensive units we have in the area to pre-emptively attack the Mongols who have landed. Kill what we can. Withdraw defenders to defensible position (Naples?). Obviously, if we attack first (assuming we can win some of the attacks), that's better than staying in the city: we eliminate an enemy with each successful attack, and the Mongols have to use up movement to kill the offensive units we send at them, before they can get to the city. Attack stacks and avoid stacking ourselves.

Any chance of putting up an insta-fortress on decent terrain in the Mongol army's path? I saw one engineer out there, any others? If we can insta-fort, we can defend there, provided it can't be bypassed easily.

If we're going to give up Kazan, sell what we can first, of course... bribing it back might be an idea, but we better be sure we can afford to defend it the second time. Use some of those caravans - get cash and science! No point in storing commodity vans at this point.

One of my faults as a player is that I get emotionally committed to my cities. I spend too much time and resources trying to defend them or recover them. IMHO we need to save as much as we can from the wreckage by selling improvements or moving units.

After capturing a city, the AI civs sometimes offer a cease-fire. We can use the time to prpepare for the next offensive (or defensive) operation.
