    Well, I'm back as science minister. Lots has happened since I was last here, so lets get caught up. We're researching steel (done in about 3 turns), and here's what we can go after next:

    Fundamentalism
    Atomic Theory*
    Tactics
    Espionage
    Genetic Engineering
    Automobile
    Radio
    Refrigeration

    * Celts researching currently

    If we want to get to space flight as quickly as possible, here's the techs needed to reach it from where we are now:

    Tactics -> Machine Tools -> Radio -> Adv. Flight -> Rocketry -> Miniaturization -> Automobile -> Mass Production -> Computers -> Space Flight
    can currently research

    Multiple choice poll: Choose one (1) of the techs to research immediately after steel, and choose whether you want to take the above path (in some form) or go a different route.

      I agree we should get as much out of Leo's as we can before it expires. Cavalry, Marines and Spies would be very comforting. Let's get Tactics and Espionage first.

        Here is my long-term order for techs.

        Tactics: to upgrade all of our dragoons to calvary. This helps destroy barb incursions and helps protect our cities.
        Espionage: to upgrade all of our diplomats to spies.
        Machine Tools: on the path to Miniturisation

        Miniturisation: Allows us to build offshore platforms drastically increasing production from our numerous coastal cities. Allows us to exploit Hoovers to a greater extent.

        I vote for miniturisation before automobile because we need to increase our production and we have the cash to upgrade many cities to offshore platforms followed by factory.

        Computers: for the SETI program to increase our total science by 50%.

        Tactics/Machine Tools/Miniturisation/Computers

        Espionage should be inserted wherever we are offered techs off this list. Same with Atomic Theory, although we probably should steal this tech if possible.

          i agree with obiwan and in that order, my only beef? why aren't we stealing techs and prepping a few dips for spies when we get the upgrade...we shouldnt do all the hard work researching techs

            Overall, we need to keep our eyes on the prize -- our SS to AC.

            I see some concern re Leo's and military upgrades.
            --Tactics is a natural.
            --Espionage is nice, but Spies cost the same as Dips, so there's no reason to pre-build them or worry about Leo's effect. If we have some around to upgrade, that would be a nice bonus.
            --Marines are worthless -- fuggedaboudit!

            I say we go ahead and take Automobile after Tactics if espionage not offered. Then Radio, Mass Production. We only need enough military might to stave off the evil enemy civs, and being first to cavalry will take care of that.

              the only thing is that spies don't die if successful....so having those dips upgraded is huge if they live, especially since we can't produce much in our cities...those shields we save can go to freight....

              IMO we should steal tech

                Spies are far superior to Diplomats, and Marines are superior to Riflemen or Cavalry in defensive mode.
                56 Marines would be a massive improvement over 56 Riiflemen. And for the cost of one tech advance!... (for Marines)

                    Mechinized Infantry requires Labour Union and Guerrilla Warfare- two techs off of the path for spaceships. Riflemen should be sufficient until the computers get mobile warfare.

                    Keep our eyes on the prize people!

                    Besides, most of the comps are Republics, which limits their growth compared with Democracies. The mongols are Fundy and will not progress without some 'help'. With the SETI program, the AI will not catch our tech progress.

                      we are stealing techs, don't worry about that, we're the tech leader, we've stolen all of the important techs that the AI posses, IIRC

                      Amphibous warfare is a wast, and John is right, riflemen do NOT upgrade to marines. And building marines in every city is a huge waste of time and production better spent on other things

                        I don't know why I keep thinking that! It's an error that seems to be permanently stuck in my brain...

                          well we should still have some dips to upgrade with, it will save money especially if they win and become vets a few spies never hurt the empire and every great nation had in/famous spies
