  • Poll: Apolytonia--Does Size Matter??

Our noble Consul, cavebear, has requested a poll on the subject of enlargement of our Capital.

As I remarked elsewhere, Apolytonia will need a Bank, a Cathedral (we need Mono) and probably a Stock Exchange, and of course, a Sewer System. For a Sewer we will need to research 3 new techs, Wheel -> Engineering -> Sanitation. With a Bank and a Sewer and maybe a bit more Lux, we can celebrate a few pops, I think.

The trade-off is that to develop Aploy' we will be draining cash needed for the development of the Colony, as well as postponing research leading to Galleons or Bridges or Knights. Is this something we should do now??

A larger city can provide goods or units that are needed very fast.. But mainly, a larger city can adjust itself rapidly for tax, science, or trade and it can build defense faster ( a real concern since we are on an island and cannot be helped much by other cities).

All true!! But isn't that what rush building is for?? And oh my, what a delay it will cause in firming up the Colony. I think we agree that the Colony is our Hope, yes??

Colony for now, will be our only hope, just because of the extra shields.

And I thought O-be-one was our only hope.

Very nice to have you posting in these (x-OTF) parts, Ben.

Well Apolytonia growth is a moot point until we have knowledge of Sewer Systems, so it must be the Colony cities for now anyway.

I am going to vote banana here as I agree with Cavebear on this being somewhat of a moot point (until Sanitation anyway). After sanatation I still think we need to focus on the colonies rather then growing Apolytonia if it requires great sacrifice.

As I type this a question comes to mind...J.S. Bachs is available and while it might not be by the time we get to Theology, I am trying to remember the effect of Bachs. I seem to recall that it is listed as only benefiting cities on the same continent (and as such would do no good in Apolytonia) but is this correct? I seem to also recall that this doesn't work that way but I am not sure which I am "mis-remembering" (I may have made that word up ).

JS Bach is civ-wide in effect. It decreases two unhappies in every city. It's pretty cool because its effects come after unit unhappiness.

We three agree. cavebear asked for the poll as a CYA measure I guess.

I agree that until we have sanitation there is no point in rush building in Apolyton. However, I would like to see a much larger capital because of the trade and research benefits (and perhaps eventualy production). As far as the colonies are concerned, I'd go for some infrastructure development (irrigation and roads), but not too much in the way of white goods - we seem to have agreed that a goodly number of colonies around size 5 is what we're aiming for.

The key point therefore seems to be the relative merits of researching towards sanitation or chivalry. This may be a tactical question based on trying to get technologies that we can use to excahnge with the AI. If there is no overwhelming tactical argument, on balance, the need for improved offensive units should probably outweigh the growth requirement in Apolyton. However, I believe that if we have the opportunity to obtain sanitation by conquest or swapping, we should take it.

Until we get dunny cans our Capital shall remain small but once we get sewers we can build up the population of our capital so the rest of the planet will be in awe of our magic.
