Looking at screenshots only is like looking at bookcovers only. Hardly seems a good basis for meaningful discussion. Opinions not solidly grounded in facts about the current reality are only accidentally relevant.

But, I guess that is what one gets with democracy. Anyone can vote and their vote counts no matter what it might have been based on.

I can not imagine why your "jury" would be still out on this subject. How can being uninformed be a valuable consideration?? I realize you can't force folk to be good citizens by doing their due diligence BEFORE offering opinions or voting, but why wouldn't they want to anyway??

I know I am new to this, and I don't mean my comments to critize a long standing culture. I'm just saying...

I can no longer remember the valid reasons for restricting the save access. Quite some time ago (after initially supporting the idea, IIRC), I started to oppose it, and somewhere along the way (probably the start of this game), it became avaliable to all. The only reason I can remember was something about playing ahead/cheating, but I don't think that's much of a reason with the few of us still about being dedicated enough to be trusted with the save anyway. And it's far more likely to rope new people in than if there WERE no save available.

And I think that is why it is now available for all.

The save files were made available to try and regain interest. Personally, I think wanting to see them encouraged many people to run for office (I know it did me), but this is a worthwhile experiment.

Heh. I think I was arguing the opposite. That not viewing the save meant I was unsure whether I could commit to a job or not...

So, you are saying that the opportunity to have detailed information of the game caused you to not run for (and serve) in office? That seems odd to me. You needed to see the game before you would run for office?

In Succession Games, few of the folk follow "the d/l and examine every save" that I always do. But there, only the next player really needs the save because everything is in his hands. But here, in a Democracy game, where everyone has a voice in what will happen next, having it mandatory for folk to look at the save seems a no-brainer.

No democracy can function well or long with an uninformed electorate. But, if muddle along is good enough for RL, it probably isn't a big deal here either.

Despite the wink at the end of your post, I can't tell if you are joking or not, but I should let you know that you made me laugh (though I am not sure if I laugh at any Democracy functioning well, or at the very concept of an "informed electorate"). Given that both your country and mine are in the process of electing a new government, it seems especially appropriate right now to discuss (though I apologize for the off topic post), I just wonder how well informed any of the voters are in any election?

Back on topic: We are all essentially agreeing that for the Democracy game today that it is important that everyone have access to the save to allow them the opportunity to view it if they so choose. But as my point in defence of RJM was intended...I don't feel it is necessary for someone to view the save to be able to offer valid opinions (or to coin the Succession Game term "RRCC"..Rabid Robust Constructive Criticism...hope I got that right! )

                    fyi...just one R (Robust)

But I essentially agree with your sentiment. And the wink was meant to lighten the effect of the post.

What I don't much comprehend, yet, is why it is thought useful for someone to post something like..."we need stealth fighters, now!!"

Now, that hasn't happened exactly (I use hyperbole), but some of the suggestions were almost as far from the current game.

I'll try more to not let things like that bother me.

Something in what you write makes me wonder if you have looked at the game. Can this be true??

                      Monk
Yes it can be true. As Sparrowhawk says I'm used to democracy games where the citizens only get to look at whatever screen shots the cabinet choose to post. In anycase, my copy of the game is on another computer.

And I didn't think I had posted anything like "we need stealth fighters now". If some aspect of my post is invalid because of a current feature in the game then it can be refuted with the facts.

If I have mis-remembered something I apologise, but it wouldn't be the first time this has happened. I remember a minister (with access to the save) posting a poll inviting us to choose to research a technology that we already had.

Yeah, sweetie, but why should other folk have to come along behind providing the facts?? Is that cool??

Anyone at any time can make a misstatement. That is not the point. The point is that better results come from better preparation.

                        That's all. It's just a suggestion.

The problem here (if there is a problem) is me and MY culture shock. I'm working hard to assimilate and adapt. Sorry if I am too blunt. And I really don't mean to offend.

Let's have some fun with this.

It's the way debate works where I come from - if you think I'm wrong about something let me know what it is. At the moment it looks to me more like we have different playing styles.

Well, an outside perspective can help.

I've always favoured keeping the save to the ministers to encourage more people to run for positions.

But with my recent absence, what can I really argue one way or another?

You'ld be surprised what you can learn from screenshots. It's actually a good mental execrise.
