  • 1836 and Beyond Session Schedule

I'm planning to play the next session Thursday night. All the polls should be closed by then AND I will have the opportunity.

Monk opened a "Ministers Report" thread. Other Ministers' reports can be posted there or emailed to me. Either is fine.

Sorry esteemed Consul. I was in Oz at a Nuke reactor, completely out of touch with the world for a few days just past. Fortunately there's squat for the FAM right now. So I'm just getting involved in the other Ministers' business as much as I can right now.
    Consul.

Back to the ROOTS of addiction. My first missed poll!

I would disagree with you here, as I think the FAM role is key right now, especially this late in the game where contact with AI could quite possibly result in War (which we don't want...oops, Minister of War..."we have mighty armies and the will to fight, let us sheath our swords in the beating hearts of our enemies ")...

What civs should we then contact if any is a question I would like to see answered (and my opinion is that we should contact them all and see what it costs us, or what it benefits us, if anything).

If we contact the four icy/hostiles, we will have four war declarations. I have seen this before. MPGE, post 1750, the AI hate us and will bust a peace treaty immediately. They probably won't even talk; just declare war. Anything else would be shocking. From the other two, alliances MIGHT be possible, but spend the cash before contact or see it demanded away under threat of War. Even then, the alliances may not survive our asking for something. But, probably, it must be done at some point.

I believe that we should avoid contact until we get the tech needed to defend ourselves. Otherwise, we are toast. Or so I fear.

Of our enemies, we have sighted the Celt ships (and the Celts are second in power to the Zulus, so I understand if we leave them alone) but have yet to see where they are, and we have an approx. idea of the Egyptians and the Sioux based on the two cities we have found (and might be wise to avoid).
This leaves the Zulus (whose nature and power in this game makes me think it might be wise to leave them alone if we can) and the Persians and the French, both of whom I think we should at a mimimum contact. (Though as I have said, I would like us to contact all six and roll the dice).

I think we have to scramble and play this game in a different way from usual practice. But, I have said my piece. Do what you will.

I, too, fear to contact any civ until we can attack a city. But I will follow the recommendation of the Foreign Minister on the matter of establishing relations.

Do we have Writing for diplomats?

Then we can let the AI come and steal techs from nearby cities.

Yes we have Writing; but, one of the Rules is no Diplomats.

I have a "severe thunderstorm warning" for the next 3 hours, so I don't know if I will be playing the session tonight after. I'll see how it goes.

And the lightning is approaching, so I have to get offline.

And a "severe thunderstorm" it was. I got .7 inch rainfall in only 15 minutes, and the lighting/thunder was spectacular. Fortunately it left as quickly as it arrived and I was able to play a session and post notes and screenshots (and I looked at the local doppler radar carefully to decide if it was safe.

No electrical failure at all. I LOVE having underground electrical cables! Even when the local switching station gets hit, power is seldom out for more than a few seconds. Still enough to fry a computer though, and I had that happen once. A matter of a few minutes (to an hour) is something of neighborhood talk for a week.

Good thing I seldom actually lose power, I have 6 digital cllocks and I have to reset all the VCR settings on those rare occassions.
