2) see if you're auto-logged in or you get the "not logged in" message on the right of the top part of the page(under the menu)

I'm always auto-logged in the Directory itself, but never in the admin panel of it, if I go there directly (if I first visit the Dir and then the admin panel there's no problem). Always thought that was odd, but never enough to bother you with...
